Background

Neil J. Wolff is a veteran Silicon Valley venture and securities attorney turned investor with more than 30–35 years in the venture industry. He earned a JD from UCLA School of Law and an MBA from Oxford University. In 1984 he joined the leading technology law firm Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati as a corporate and securities partner, where over the course of his career he handled thousands of transactions — company formations, financings, IPOs and M&A — and became one of VantagePoint's principal outside counsel.

In 2006 he moved in-house to VantagePoint Capital Partners (VPCP), the Silicon Valley venture firm founded in 1996 that has managed more than $4.5 billion and backed companies including Tesla Motors, BrightSource Energy, Solazyme, MiaSolé, Bridgelux and Better Place. As Managing Director & General Counsel he advises the firm on its investments and counsels its portfolio companies, combining a legal role with an investment-advisory perspective.

Alongside VantagePoint, Wolff has built his own investing platform around the Oxford alumni network. In 2016 he founded the Oxford Angel Fund — rebranded to Oxonian Ventures in July 2024 — described as "the leading early stage venture fund investing in companies founded by Oxford Alumni." Across Fund I and Fund II the vehicle invested in 30+ Oxford-founded companies, and in 2024 it announced the first close of a ~$15 million Fund III (the Oxford Alumni Venture Fund III), backed by 90+ "Oxonian" investors and tied into the Oxford Entrepreneurs Network.

He is also a founding/senior partner at VIVE Venture Capital (est. 2017, Palo Alto), a fund started by senior Silicon Valley venture and M&A professionals that provides late-stage financing to venture-backed companies preparing for a sale — including bridge rounds and undersubscribed financings.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Oxford as the filter: Oxonian Ventures backs startups founded by University of Oxford alumni, prizing what Wolff calls the "exceptional attributes of Oxonian founders — qualities encompassing brilliance, global exposure, and resilience."
  • Founder qualities he weights most: "immense energy, particularly an outward-focused, sales-oriented energy," plus deep domain expertise, adaptability/willingness to pivot, and a diverse skill set spanning sales, technical work, strategy and team-building.
  • Stage & checks: Enters at the angel/pre-seed stage with ~$50K–$75K checks, scaling to ~$100K–$200K in first priced equity rounds as companies mature; the fund aims to seed roughly 10–12 startups per fund cycle.
  • Sector-agnostic, thesis-driven by team: Portfolio spans marketplaces, ESG/impact data, medical diagnostics and climate biotech — selection is driven by founder quality and Oxford ties rather than a single vertical.
  • Community + returns: "Financial returns for investors are paramount," but the fund also leans on its LP network and the Oxford Entrepreneurs Network for mentorship and ecosystem support.
  • Different mandate at VIVE: late-stage, M&A-oriented capital for venture-backed companies expected to be sold rather than IPO — larger, situational checks (bridges, undersubscribed rounds).

Notable Investments

  • OpenSponsorship — online marketplace connecting brands with athletes for sponsorships.
  • Proof of Impact — digital platform for measuring ESG and impact data.
  • AOA (Asymmetrex / AOA Dx) — developing an early-stage, non-invasive ovarian cancer diagnostic test.
  • Bluumbio — bio-based technologies to rapidly remediate contaminated soil and air.
  • mote — audio toolkit for educators and learners.
  • Note: across Funds I and II the platform invested in 30+ Oxford-alumni-founded companies; VantagePoint's separate portfolio includes Tesla Motors, BrightSource Energy, Solazyme, Bridgelux and Better Place (firm-level, not necessarily Wolff's personal deals).
