Background
Niall Cairns is a Sydney-based technology investor with over 25 years of direct seed, venture capital, private equity, and listed-company experience focused on technology growth companies. He holds a Bachelor of Economics (studying economics, accountancy, and law) from the University of Sydney (1981–1984) and is a Chartered Accountant (CA / ACA). He co-founded Nanyang Ventures in 1993, serving as Managing Director, and led its transformation into Kestrel Capital, where he continues as Managing Director and Co-Founder.
Across his career, Cairns has invested in more than 30 unlisted companies — and many more listed developing companies — and has been credited with helping drive the global growth of over 50 companies. At Kestrel/Nanyang he raised six funds (including three licensed by Innovation Australia) and served as a director of numerous portfolio businesses, delivering a track record of value creation, restructuring, and exits across both listed and unlisted companies.
Beyond his fund work, Cairns is Executive Chairman and Co-Founder of CardieX Limited (ASX: CDX), a health-technology company built around the AtCor Medical arterial-health business, and has held executive/chairman roles connected to CONNEQT Health, Tambla Limited, and Tru-Test. He currently sits on the Investment Committees of Kestrel Structured Capital, Kestrel Growth Companies, and the KTT (Kestrel) fund. His broader board and community roles have included Non-Executive Chairman of the St Andrew's College Foundation, and membership of the Young Presidents' Organization (Sydney).
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests across the full lifecycle — from seed and venture capital through growth-stage private equity — in technology companies with global expansion potential.
- Backs "growth companies with global opportunities" concentrated in technology, resources, niche manufacturing and services, with a modern sector emphasis on digital media, agtech, medtech, consumer internet and SaaS.
- Emphasizes value creation, restructuring, and exits — a hands-on, director-level operating approach rather than passive capital.
- Comfortable with both listed and unlisted companies and cross-border deals (Australia, NZ, US, UK, China).
