Background

Nic Brisbourne has worked in venture capital since the turn of the millennium. After a start as a management consultant, he joined Reuters Venture Capital in 1999. He holds First Class Honours in Social and Political Science from the University of Cambridge (1995) and was educated at Dr Challoner's Grammar School. In 2006 he became a founding partner of the firm then known as Esprit / DFJ Esprit — later Draper Esprit and today Molten Ventures — where he spent roughly seven years as a Partner, leading over 40 investments across London and Silicon Valley. His earlier track record includes notable exits such as buy.at (acquired by AOL for $125m) and Zeus Technology (acquired by Riverbed for $140m).

In June 2013 he left DFJ Esprit to found Forward Partners, an "Applied VC" built on the thesis that hands-on operational support — not just capital — is what most improves early-stage outcomes. Forward backed companies from day one and surrounded them with an internal team spanning growth, talent, product and design. Under his leadership Forward raised two funds, listed on the London Stock Exchange in 2021, and invested in more than 70 UK startups, whose portfolios collectively raised over £1.5 billion in follow-on funding.

In a full-circle turn, Molten Ventures — the direct descendant of the firm he helped found in 2006 — agreed to acquire Forward Partners in a deal valued at roughly £41m, announced in November 2023 and completed in January 2024. The acquisition folded Forward's 40+ seed-stage companies (including Bea Fertility, Gravity Sketch and Robin AI) into Molten's Series A/B franchise, and Brisbourne returned to Molten as a Senior Partner.

Alongside investing, Brisbourne is well known as the author of *The Equity Kicker*, long cited as one of Europe's most-read VC blogs, and has taught and spoken widely on venture capital. He describes personal interests in meditation and "amateur body hacking," and cites self-awareness and personal growth as keys to long-term success.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests at pre-seed and seed, historically writing initial checks of ~£250k–£5m, with the model built around providing operational support, not just money.
  • Core question he asks of a company: "Can this be huge? Will the product make a big difference to the world, and will they move very fast post-investment?"
  • Values founders who bring passion, grit and an inspiring vision; as a CEO scorecard he prioritizes sales growth, team quality and product quality.
  • Sector interest centers on eCommerce, marketplaces, consumer, software/SaaS, applied AI and Web3 — areas where Forward built repeatable operational playbooks.
  • Believes fit matters both ways: founders should "think carefully about how and why that particular investor is the one they want in their corner," since not every firm suits every founder.
  • Points to Forward's outcome data as validation of the applied model — portfolio companies described as ~4x more likely to reach Series A and at meaningfully higher valuations.

Notable Investments

  • Cazoo — UK online used-car marketplace; reached unicorn status and later listed publicly (Forward was an early backer).
  • Zopa — pioneering UK peer-to-peer lender, later a digital bank.
  • Skimlinks — content-monetization / affiliate technology (acquired by Connexity).
  • Gravity Sketch — 3D design and VR creation platform; participated in its ~$33m Series A.
  • Robin AI — AI-powered legal contract platform; participated in its ~$10.5m Series A.
  • Bea Fertility — at-home fertility treatment startup.
  • Lyst — fashion marketplace/aggregator (from his earlier Esprit-era investing).
  • Big Health — mental-health / digital therapeutics company, cited as his first investment at Forward.
  • buy.at — affiliate network, acquired by AOL for $125m (earlier career exit).
  • Zeus Technology — web software, acquired by Riverbed for $140m (earlier career exit).
