Nick Beim

Nick Beim is a Partner at Venrock, the venture capital firm created by the Rockefeller family that helped pioneer the venture capital industry. Based in New York City, Beim focuses on early-stage investments in artificial intelligence, software, fintech, and defense. He joined Venrock in 2012 after spending over a decade as a General Partner at Matrix Partners (2000-2012), where he built a strong track record investing in enterprise software and consumer internet companies. Before entering venture capital, Beim worked in the technology groups at McKinsey & Company (1996-1998) and Goldman Sachs (1998-2000), giving him deep grounding in both strategic consulting and investment banking.

Beim holds a BA in Philosophy from Stanford University and an MPhil in International Relations from the University of Oxford, where he studied as a Marshall Scholar. He also attended Phillips Academy Andover. Beim prefers to invest very early -- most of the companies he backs have fewer than 10 employees and have not yet launched a product. He emphasizes helping portfolio companies develop product and business strategy and build out their teams.

• Vertical AI: Beim believes that as general intelligence commoditizes, the real value will accrue to vertical AI companies that apply AI to transform decision-making within specific, data-rich industries. He focuses on sectors where decisions are high-stakes and data is abundant -- particularly financial services, legal, and defense.
• Fintech / Wealthtech: He has built a concentrated portfolio aimed at rebuilding the technology foundations of wealth and asset management. Investments include Altruist (digital custodian for financial advisors), Moment (fixed income infrastructure), Vanilla (AI-driven estate planning), and FINNY (AI-driven prospecting for financial advisors).
• Defense & National Security: Beim invests in companies using AI to strengthen national security capabilities, including Dataminr (real-time information discovery), Percipient.ai (visual intelligence for national and corporate security), and Rebellion Defense (AI-driven defense products).
