Background
Nicolas Biet is a Belgian finance professional turned early-stage investor. He studied Business Engineering / Management with a finance focus at HEC Liège (Université de Liège) from 1998 to 2003. He then built roughly a decade of operating experience in financial control and management advisory across the automotive and IT sectors — including about seven years at Toyota Europe, where he handled the financial aspects of the R&D department, followed by roughly four years at an IT company. This industrial rather than financial-services grounding is a defining feature of his profile.
In 2014 Biet joined The Faktory Fund, the Liège-based early-stage tech fund founded by Pierre L'Hoest (founder and former CEO of EVS Broadcast Equipment, the slow-motion TV technology pioneer) and Simon Alexandre (former CEO of the CETIC research center). As one of three hands-on partners, he served as the fund's financial advisor / general partner — managing the financial and legal matters of the fund, structuring deals, and representing The Faktory on the boards of several portfolio companies. The Faktory's second fund, an €18M vehicle, was established in December 2019 (earlier investments were made through a family-office structure).
Since March 2025, Biet has moved to Noshaq — a Liège-based private investment company with "public DNA" — where he is an Investment Manager in the Energy branch, focusing on digital innovation and the energy transition. His email at The Faktory ([hidden]) and his historical general-partner title reflect his decade there; his current day-to-day role is at Noshaq.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Stage & structure: Seed / early-stage, typically as a co-investor. At The Faktory the fund made roughly 12–13 new investments over a five-year period, with an average first check of ~€500,000 and participation in €1–2M rounds.
- What they back: B2B digital-technology startups commercializing SaaS or IoT solutions aiming for "worldwide leadership" in their B2B market — primarily in Information & Communication Technologies.
- Differentiator: Unlike many similarly sized funds, The Faktory is willing to finance projects that involve physical hardware/assets, not just pure software.
- Geography: BeNeLux and France.
- What makes them say yes — in his own words: *"Try to contact us directly rather than through our website, and communicate your passion to convince us to be among the few to be financed."*
- Value-add: Biet personally supports founders with financial expertise, business modelling, strategic negotiations, and market analysis — reflecting his controller/CFO-style background.
