Nicolas Brenninkmeijer

Nicolas Brenninkmeijer is a member of the Dutch Brenninkmeijer family, the owners of the C&A retail group and the COFRA Holding empire (which also encompasses Redevco in real estate, Bregal Investments in private equity, and Anthos/Good Energies). His professional path runs through several arms of the family's and adjacent finance world: public sources list prior roles at C&A, at J.P. Morgan, and at Freshstream, the London mid-market private equity firm where he worked as an Associate. Freshstream itself has a direct family lineage — it was founded in 2015 as Bregal Freshstream, backed by Bregal Investments (the Brenninkmeijer family's private-investment unit), before splitting from its sole investor and rebranding as the independent Freshstream in 2020.

Freshstream is not an angel or seed investor. It is a hands-on mid-market buyout house that partners with successful entrepreneurs and family-owned companies to "drive growth and scale operations," typically taking majority stakes (while retaining flexibility to invest as a minority or across the capital structure) in established Western European businesses. It operates from offices in London (50 Hans Crescent, SW1X), Amsterdam (The Baxter Building) and Paris (4 rue Royale). Nicolas's associate-level role there would have involved deal execution and portfolio support rather than independent check-writing.

More recently, Nicolas has pivoted from finance into academia. He completed an MSc in Economic History at the London School of Economics (LSE) in December 2023 and is now a doctoral scholar at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), affiliated with the Social History of Capitalism (SHOC) research group and the HOST group. His PhD, part of the "Ancestor's Tale: 200 years of inequality in Belgium" project (a VUB–University of Antwerp collaboration), is titled "Capital, Industry, and Empire: the role of financial assets in shaping wealth inequality in Belgium," supervised by Prof. Wouter Ryckbosch (VUB) with Profs. Gerlinde Verbist and Bruno Blondé (Antwerp). He also serves as a PhD representative for the N.W. Posthumus Institute (2023 cohort). Academic bios describe him as "a private equity investor specialising in entrepreneur-led businesses in the Benelux" before his move into research.
