Background
Nicolas Chaudron is a Managing Partner at Idinvest Partners, the Paris-based European venture capital and private equity firm (founded in 1997 as AGF Private Equity, spun out of Allianz in 2010, and merged into Eurazeo in 2018). He began his career in private equity/venture capital at Europatweb, the internet investment vehicle founded by Bernard Arnault, before joining Idinvest Partners in 2001. Since 2006 he has focused on the cleantech sector, and he now leads Idinvest's "Smart City" practice, which backs start-ups disrupting the energy, transportation, and building industries.
Beyond deal-making, Chaudron built and manages a network of industrial strategic partners for the firm — including EDF, PSA, Total, SNCF, Orange, Michelin and Air Liquide — that develop partnerships with portfolio start-ups to accelerate their growth. He is also involved in Idinvest's international development, investing in US start-ups and supporting European companies expanding into Asia, drawing on more than 15 years of professional experience in China, where he previously lived.
He is active in the cleantech ecosystem beyond the fund: he has served on the European Advisory Board of the Cleantech Group and founded the Club Cleantech of AFIC (the French Private Equity Association), a platform to foster the French cleantech ecosystem. Public records also list him as a director of companies including Nenuphar SA, Seatower AS and Technologgia SAS, and he sat on the boards of early French cleantech pioneers such as Siriatech and Vizelia.
On education, Chaudron holds a postgraduate degree in mathematics from Paris VI University (Université Pierre et Marie Curie), an MBA from the Collège des Ingénieurs, and an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a Palmer Scholar.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests through Idinvest's venture/growth funds in cleantech and "Smart City" start-ups — energy, electric mobility/transportation, and buildings — rather than as a personal angel.
- Comfortable with capital-intensive, hardware/deep-tech businesses: "The specificity of cleantech in financing innovation is longer and more costly development cycles" (translated from a 2014 interview).
- Works to long investment horizons of roughly 5–7 years, and stresses that regulatory stability is decisive for the kind of infrastructure-adjacent companies he backs.
- Favors business models that pool financial resources across SMEs, large corporates and public authorities, and innovative financing structures such as third-party / energy-performance financing ("we get paid on the energy savings").
- Brings a corporate-partnership angle: a key part of his value-add is connecting start-ups to industrial partners (EDF, Total, SNCF, PSA, Michelin, Orange, Air Liquide) for commercial traction and scale.
- Values international expansion potential, particularly a credible path into the US and Asia/China.
