Background

Nicolas Mérindol was born on 20 February 1961 in Cambrai, France. He completed HEC preparatory studies at the Lycée Henri IV in Paris, graduated from the Institut Supérieur de Gestion (ISG) in Paris, and qualified as a chartered accountant (expert-comptable). He began his career from 1984 to 1987 in the finance department of Renault, working in both France and Argentina, before joining the Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations (where he managed a Sorefi regional financing company).

In 1988 he joined the Groupe Caisse d'Épargne, becoming financial director of the Caisse d'Épargne de Picardie in 1996 and rising through the group's central body (CNCE). In September 2006 he was appointed Directeur Général of the Groupe Caisse d'Épargne — described at the time as one of the youngest CEOs of a major generalist bank. His tenure ended abruptly on 18 October 2008: during the financial crisis, following a trading loss of roughly €751 million, he resigned alongside supervisory-board chairman Charles Milhaud.

After 2008 Mérindol reinvented himself as an entrepreneur-banker and advisor. He served as vice-president / France representative of Banca Leonardo (from January 2010), and built a portfolio of consulting and advisory activities, taking stakes in recognized expert firms such as Equitis and Amilton Partners (joined 2012 as a strategic shareholder, exited 2014). In September/November 2014 he founded Groupe Carmin (Carmin Finance), a financial group articulating "advisory banking" with expert services and equity participations, positioned to give voice to the "real economy," industry, and services.

Since December 2022 he has chaired the Directoire (management board) of Banque Fiducial — commercially known as FIDUCIAL Banque and Thémis Banque, a subsidiary of the Fiducial group — after joining its board in 2022, with a mandate to support external-growth (M&A) operations, governance, and commercial strategy. He has held numerous other mandates, including president of Crédit Foncier de France, board roles at the Centre France / La Montagne press group (chairing its holding company since 2018), Vigeo, Foch Hospital, and the AMREF Flying Doctors France (chair since 2009). He is a Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur (2015) and holds Morocco's Ordre du Ouissam El Alaouite.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Operates through Groupe Carmin Finance, whose model combines M&A/corporate-finance advisory with taking equity stakes in specialist "expert" financial and services firms — an entrepreneur-banker approach rather than venture/seed investing.
  • Explicit orientation toward the "real economy," industry, and services, delivered through close, proximity-based banker-client relationships.
  • Champions the concept of "légitimité entrepreneuriale" (entrepreneurial legitimacy) — the trust-building elements around a company that he frames as a driver of success and performance. In his words, *"La légitimité entrepreneuriale n'est ni une mode, ni un gadget"* ("Entrepreneurial legitimacy is neither a fad nor a gadget").
  • Focus sectors reflect his career: banking, asset management, insurance, real estate, and media.
  • Comfortable with external growth / M&A and governance work for established institutions (e.g., his current mandate assisting Banque Fiducial with acquisitions and strategy).
  • No verifiable public record of individual seed-stage startup checks or a defined "check size," despite the stub's angel-investor framing.
