Background

Nigel Middleton is a Partner in the Infrastructure team of 3i Group plc, based in London. He joined 3i in November 2013 following the firm's acquisition of Barclays Infrastructure Funds Management Limited (BIFM), where he had worked since 2002. Before moving into fund management, he was head of PFI/PPP Advisory Services at PwC, advising on public–private partnership and private finance initiative transactions.

At BIFM he was a central figure in the UK infrastructure fund market. He led BIFM's involvement in the formation and management of Infrastructure Investors (I2), a pioneering secondary-market infrastructure fund held as a joint venture alongside Société Générale and 3i. He was also instrumental in establishing and managing BIIF (Barclays Integrated Infrastructure Fund), a long-term "buy and hold" PPP fund that acquired I2 in 2009 — work that carried over into 3i's infrastructure platform after the 2013 acquisition.

He holds an honours degree in Chemistry from the University of Oxford and is a qualified Chartered Accountant.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests in operational, cash-generative infrastructure — economic and social infrastructure assets, PPP/PFI concessions, and secondary-market infrastructure portfolios — rather than early-stage companies.
  • Emphasis on long-term, "buy and hold" ownership of infrastructure assets, the model he built with BIIF, in contrast to short-hold trading.
  • Focus on UK and European projects, drawing on a PFI/PPP advisory background.
  • His work is fund- and asset-level (fund formation, portfolio management, secondary acquisitions), not writing personal angel checks into startups.

Notable Investments

  • Infrastructure Investors (I2) — pioneering UK secondary-market infrastructure fund; joint venture with Société Générale and 3i. Middleton led BIFM's involvement in its formation and management.
  • BIIF (Barclays Integrated Infrastructure Fund) — long-term "buy and hold" PPP fund he helped establish and managed; acquired I2 in 2009.
  • 3i's infrastructure platform — his BIFM funds and mandates transferred to 3i on the November 2013 completion of the BIFM acquisition.
