Background

Nikolai Molibog is a Russian media executive best documented as the head of RBC Group, one of Russia’s major business-media and information-services companies. RBC describes itself as a group that provides information, services, and technology, with products spanning news, subscriptions, investments, trends, research, companies data, events, and related business services.

Before RBC, Molibog led Afisha-Rambler. In May 2013, after the merger of Afisha-Rambler and SUP Media into the combined “Rambler-Afisha-SUP” company, Lenta.ru reported that Molibog stepped down from his role as chief executive of Afisha-Rambler because the new structure did not contain a role acceptable to all sides.

RBC-related public histories state that Molibog became chief executive of RBC after previously leading Afisha-Rambler. During RBC’s 2013–2016 relaunch period, the company repositioned around business journalism and sold or reduced non-core assets while building a unified media operation across site, newspaper, magazine, and TV. Later RBC materials show the group expanding into subscriptions, events, market research, business data, and adjacent products.

I did not find reliable public evidence that Molibog is currently active as an individual angel investor, nor verified public education details, personal LinkedIn profile, personal check size, or personal startup portfolio.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • No verifiable public angel-investing thesis, check size, or seed-stage mandate was found in the sources reviewed.
  • The strongest documented professional focus is business-information infrastructure: RBC’s own site describes the group as combining media, IT services, and infrastructure for business.
  • His public comments point to interest in long-term operating conditions for business. In a December 2023 RBC public talk, Molibog said Russian business needs predictable rules, stating that “business is ready to accept even bad rules. But it needs rules.”
  • Based on the documented RBC platform rather than a personal angel thesis, the most relevant founder fit would be companies connected to business media, data products, B2B information services, events, advertising/media technology, or analytics.

Notable Investments

  • Scoring Technologies / Rescore — RBC acquired a 25% stake in the company behind Rescore, an AI-based counterparty verification and risk-assessment service, in 2020; this is a corporate RBC deal, not a verified personal angel investment by Molibog.
  • Ru-Web.Investments / Ru-Center transaction — RBC sold Ru-Center Group in 2021 to a private-investor consortium led by Proxima Capital Group and received a 25% stake in Ru-Web.Investments; this is also a corporate RBC transaction.
  • National Credit Ratings — RBC established National Credit Ratings in 2019 as a credit-rating agency; this is a group-level business build-out, not a personal startup investment.
