Norbert Frischauf

Norbert Frischauf (born 1968 in Vienna) is an Austrian high-energy physicist, aerospace systems engineer, entrepreneur and science communicator. He studied technical physics at the Vienna University of Technology (TU Wien) alongside astronomy at the University of Vienna, completing a diploma in high-energy physics in 1998; his diploma work contributed to the VFT Ministrip detector of the DELPHI experiment at CERN. He later earned a PhD in electrical engineering from Graz University of Technology (TU Graz) in 2014, with a dissertation on communication/exploration/navigation technologies built around MOA², a novel pulsed plasma accelerator. He also attended the International Space University summer session at Rice University in 1997.

His early career spanned two of the world's largest research organisations. At CERN he worked on the DELPHI Forward Tracker and Forward Chamber detectors and, after LEP shut down in 2000, joined the CMS group at the Large Hadron Collider. In parallel he joined ESA's ESTEC centre in Noordwijk (from 1998) as an avionics engineer on the Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV) and as a "Future Studies Systems Engineer" on the Aurora exploration programme, where he was the expert for nuclear propulsion and energy concepts and responsible for the programme's 30-year strategy. From 1999–2006 he consulted at Booz Allen Hamilton on aerospace, telecoms and high-tech projects, and in 2006 he commanded the six-person crew of "AustroMars," Austria's first Mars analog mission, at the Mars Desert Research Station in Utah.

Since 2012 Frischauf has been owner and managing director of SIGMA-7 in Austria and a partner at SpaceTec Partners in Munich and Brussels — a strategy and technology consultancy whose main clients are the European Commission, ESA, other space agencies and leading industrial firms. SpaceTec Partners merged with Euroconsult in 2024 to form Novaspace, where Frischauf serves as Chief Technologist. Beyond consulting he is a prolific author, broadcaster and science communicator (e.g. anchorman of science, technology & innovation at the European Media & Content Pool), and an elected member of the International Academy of Astronautics (2017).

Frischauf is fundamentally an operator and founder rather than a classic financial angel: his "investing" is mostly building and co-founding deep-tech ventures. Public records document his own companies more than a portfolio of passive angel cheques, so founders should treat the "Angel Investor / Seed" label as reflecting his hands-on, founder-led early-stage involvement.
