Background

Norman Rothstein is a serial entrepreneur and investment banker who builds and seeds early-stage companies rather than deploying capital through a traditional fund. He operates through Intellectual Patents Inc. (IPI) — also branded as Intellectual Digital — a self-described "launch pad" holding company he co-founded and chairs, which funds and develops subsidiaries and drives proprietary technologies to commercialization. He describes his own edge as identifying ideas and concepts with value and applying investment-banking discipline to seed and scale them.

Rothstein's track record predates his current firm. In 1996 he co-founded H Power Corp., a fuel-cell development company, and served on its board of directors from July 1996 to April 2000; the company went public in an IPO that raised over $100 million and reached a market capitalization approaching $1 billion on NASDAQ. He was also a partner/investor in EOTech Inc., a defense and military optics contractor acquired in a syndicate purchase for roughly $1.5 million in 2002 and sold to L-3 Communications in 2006 for more than $55 million in cash.

His flagship venture is Aptiviti Inc., the majority-owned IPI subsidiary that is the parent of Enterprise Technology Research (ETR), a data-driven enterprise-technology market-research firm founded around 2010. Rothstein serves as Chairman, Co-Founder and President of Aptiviti, and is credited as a co-founder of ETR alongside founder Thomas DelVecchio and data-science lead Sagar Kadakia. ETR's Technology Spending Intentions Survey (TSIS) captures forward-looking IT spending intentions from thousands of enterprise decision-makers and is sold to tier-one hedge funds, mutual funds, family offices, private equity and venture firms. Under Rothstein, Aptiviti grew from roughly a $15M valuation at inception to about $80M at its last (2018) valuation.

In May 2026, The Futurum Group signed a definitive agreement to acquire Aptiviti (parent of ETR), with the deal closing on June 5, 2026 — folding ETR's predictive spending data into the Futurum Intelligence Platform. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests as a hands-on founder-operator at the seed / earliest stage, typically incubating companies inside his IPI / Intellectual Digital "launch pad" rather than writing passive angel checks.
  • Targets companies with proprietary IP, defensible data, or cutting-edge technology that can be driven to commercialization — his history spans fuel cells (H Power), defense optics (EOTech), and enterprise data/research (ETR).
  • Brings an investment-banking lens: seeding early-stage ventures and structuring them toward exits/IPOs, having engineered a ~$1B-market-cap IPO (H Power) and a $55M+ trade sale (EOTech).
  • Believes in data over opinion as the value driver — the founding ethos behind ETR ("data, not opinion, should drive the most consequential technology decisions").
  • Says yes to ideas he judges to have durable, monetizable value that he can help build and commercialize, not just fund.

Notable Investments

  • Aptiviti Inc. / Enterprise Technology Research (ETR) — Enterprise-technology market-research firm (founded ~2010) selling predictive IT-spending data to Wall Street; grew to ~$80M valuation (2018); parent Aptiviti acquired by The Futurum Group in June 2026.
  • H Power Corp. — Fuel-cell developer he co-founded in 1996; IPO raised $100M+, nearing a $1B NASDAQ market cap (board member 1996–2000).
  • EOTech Inc. — Defense/military optics contractor; acquired via syndicate (~$1.5M, 2002) and sold to L-3 Communications for $55M+ (2006).
  • Intellectual Patents Inc. (IPI) / Intellectual Digital — Co-founded holding "launch pad" that funds and develops subsidiaries (including Aptiviti and its ETR, VENN, and RAMP divisions).
