Norman Winarsky

Norman D. Winarsky is a technology entrepreneur, venture advisor, author, and angel investor best known as a co-founder and board member of Siri, Inc. Siri spun out of SRI International in January 2008 and was acquired by Apple in April 2010, later becoming a core Apple product across iPhone and other devices.

Winarsky spent much of his career at SRI International, where he founded and led SRI Ventures. In that role, he built SRI’s venture-incubation process, including venture and license incubation, seed funding, an Entrepreneur-in-Residence program, and venture-capital engagement. SRI and related sources credit that process with launching more than 60 to 70 ventures, including Siri, Nuance, Intuitive Surgical, Tempo AI, Desti, Trapit, and Kasisto.

He joined Relay Ventures in May 2016 as the firm’s first Executive-in-Residence and later held Partner / Venture Partner roles. At Relay, his role was to advise portfolio-company entrepreneurs and support the investment team with diligence, especially on deep technology innovation. He is currently Founder & President of Winarsky Ventures, where he advises venture groups, serves on boards, consults with companies, speaks, and makes angel investments.

Winarsky holds B.A., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in mathematics from the University of Chicago. He has also been a Lecturer in Management at Stanford Graduate School of Business, a Visiting Scholar at Stanford University, co-author of *If You Really Want to Change the World: A Guide to Creating, Building, and Sustaining Breakthrough Ventures*, and a recipient of a Technology & Engineering Emmy Award and RCA’s Sarnoff Award.

• Invests in early-stage companies in artificial intelligence, natural language processing, and computer vision, where his technical background and network are strongest.
• Looks for “breakthrough” ventures rather than incremental products. His framework starts with a major unmet need, a large market opportunity, differentiated technology or business solution, a strong team, a clear value proposition, the right investors and board, and fast execution.
• Strongly prefers ventures with real customer pain and evidence from customers, not market-size arithmetic. In his startup-writing, he warns that claiming “1% of a large market” is not enough for VC credibility.
• Values product ambition beyond a bare MVP. His advice: “You need to launch a MAP. A Minimum Awesome Product.”
• Believes speed is central to startup success. In a 2025 LinkedIn article, he described speed as the “oxygen of startups.”
• Through the Washington Post’s WP Incubator, he has recently focused on “moonshots” at the intersection of AI, media, storytelling, trust, civic impact, and public information.
