Background
Olivier Litzka is a Partner on Andera Partners' Life Sciences (BioDiscovery) team, which he joined in 2006 when the group was still part of Edmond de Rothschild Investment Partners (EdRIP). He holds a PhD in molecular microbiology from the University of Munich (LMU), where his research focused on the molecular regulation of antibiotic biosynthesis. He began his professional career in 1998 at Mercer Management Consulting in Munich, advising healthcare and industrial clients across Europe, the US and Asia.
In 2000 he moved into venture capital, joining 3i's Munich Life Sciences practice to manage biotechnology and medical-device investments in Germany. In 2004 he relocated to Paris to lead 3i's Life Sciences venture activities in France, where he oversaw exits from the legacy portfolio and made new investments in both France and the US. He carried that dual German/French, biotech/medtech expertise into Andera in 2006, helping build its life-sciences franchise into one of the leading European players in the space.
Today Litzka has more than 20 years of VC experience, roughly 15 of them as a partner at Andera. The BioDiscovery franchise he helps lead alongside partners such as Gilles Nobécourt, Naveed Siddiqi and Raphaël Wisniewski invests across biotech and medtech and has raised a succession of funds — including BioDiscovery 5 (€345M), BioDiscovery 6 (€456M, 2021) and BioDiscovery 7 (first close >€300M). He is a frequent public voice on European life-sciences investing, including a Medtech Money podcast episode ("The Power of And: Investing in Early and Late-Stage Global Medtech Startups") and German-language interviews on Andera's >€4B in assets under management.
He is also central to Andera's push to deepen its presence in the DACH region, reflecting his German roots and network with German-speaking founders and limited partners.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests primarily at Series A and Series B in biotech and medical-device companies, typically leading or co-leading rounds and taking a board seat.
- Check size commonly in the ~$5M–$35M range per deal (sweet spot around $20M), scaling to €15M–€60M cumulatively per company through Andera's life-sciences strategies.
- Portfolio mix skews roughly two-thirds biotech / one-third medtech — spanning novel therapeutics (immuno-oncology, radiopharmaceuticals, anti-inflammatory), platform companies, and device businesses in areas like structural heart.
- Backs companies across Europe and the US, with distinctive strength in Germany and the broader DACH region given his network and language advantage.
- Values companies that can be built toward strategic M&A exits with large pharma / medtech acquirers — his track record is heavy on trade sales rather than IPOs (e.g., Corvidia, Arvelle, Endosense, Supersonic Imagine).
- Emphasizes the "power of And" — a willingness to invest across both early and late stages and across both biotech and medtech, rather than specializing narrowly.
