Background
Omer Ben-Shach is a Managing Partner/Managing Director at BM Holdings, the Ben-Shach family's international single-family office. BM Holdings traces its roots to fuel-distribution operations the family built in the 1950s that eventually merged into Paz, Israel's leading energy company; the group (led by Moudi/Mordechai Ben-Shach since 1977) still holds roughly 4% of Paz and today invests across energy and recycling technologies, real estate, startups, and investment funds. Within the firm, Omer covers primarily M&A and portfolio management. Earlier in his career he served in the Israel Defense Forces.
In 2018 Omer founded Edge Partners as the private-equity arm of the BM Holdings group and introduced a new investment thesis centered on the search-fund model. He is widely credited as one of the pioneers of Israel's search-fund/ETA ecosystem — described as the "first Israeli search fund investor" and the first Israeli serial search-fund investor to participate in a traditional search-fund acquisition. By his own account he has spent more than seven years in the ETA space and completed 60+ investments in the sector, backing more than 40 search funds, over 20 acquisitions, and five add-on M&A deals.
He is an INSEAD MBA alumnus (Class of 2018) and serves as a Search Fund & ETA Entrepreneur in Residence at INSEAD's ETA/Search Fund Club. He has also been associated with executive education at Harvard Business School (Owner/President Management program). More recently, he became an operating partner and investor in Pitlane Capital, a ~$25 million ETA fund launched with Mindspace co-founder Yotam Alroy that backs entrepreneur-operators acquiring established small businesses.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Two-track approach: direct seed-stage startup and VC-fund investing through BM Holdings, plus a specialized focus on search funds / Entrepreneurship Through Acquisition (ETA) — his signature area.
- ETA logic: backs experienced entrepreneurs ("searchers") who raise capital to find, buy, and personally run a profitable private company, then grow it as owner-operators — targeting "small family-owned businesses facing the retirement of founders or lack of a successor generation."
- What he looks for in ETA targets: profitable, stable, cash-generating businesses with proven customer bases in sectors with durable structural demand (ranging from software firms and private clinics to services and real-estate brokerages).
- Model economics cited around Pitlane's strategy: median acquisition ~$14M at ~7x EBITDA, typical investment multiples of ~4.5–5x, with reported average IRRs around 35%; common exits to private equity or strategic buyers.
- Ecosystem builder: actively grows the Israeli and international search-fund community through Edge Partners, INSEAD's ETA club, and Pitlane Capital rather than acting purely as a passive check-writer.
Notable Investments
- Pitlane Capital — ~$25M ETA fund (co-launched with Yotam Alroy, Mindspace co-founder); Omer is operating partner and investor.
- Edge Partners — PE arm he founded in 2018 within BM Holdings to execute the search-fund thesis.
- 40+ search funds backed / 20+ acquisitions / 5 add-on M&As — aggregate track record across the ETA portfolio (specific company names not publicly itemized).
- BM Holdings portfolio — tech companies, startups, VC funds, and capital-market activities alongside the group's energy (Paz stake) and real-estate holdings.
