Background
Owen M. Basham is a Partner at Sentinel Capital Partners, a New York–based private equity firm founded in 1994/1995 by David S. Lobel and John F. McCormack that specializes in acquiring lower-middle-market companies. He joined Sentinel in 2012 as an Associate and rose through the ranks — Senior Associate, Vice President, and Principal — before reaching Partner. His investment focus at the firm is on the industrials and consumer sectors.
Before Sentinel, Basham was an Associate in Macquarie Capital's Restructuring and Special Situations Group. Earlier in his career he was an Analyst at Nancy Creek Capital, a lower-middle-market private equity and mezzanine debt firm, which he joined alongside O. Scott Barfield to build out the fund's mezzanine and equity investing team.
He earned a BS in Commerce from the University of Virginia's McIntire School of Commerce.
In March 2025, Sentinel announced a leadership succession plan in which Eric Bommer joined founder David Lobel as co-managing partner. Basham was named among the firm's tenured partners — alongside Jim Coady, Michael Fabian, Paul Murphy, Scott Perry, Garrett Schires, and John Van Sickle — who will carry the firm forward as Lobel and McCormack transition over time.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests through Sentinel's control-buyout strategy, not seed/angel deals: leveraged buyouts, management buyouts, corporate divestitures, industry consolidations, going-private transactions, and growth/junior capital.
- Sentinel's stated approach: "partner with talented management teams to acquire businesses with $5–25 million of EBITDA and solid fundamentals," favoring profitable, asset-light companies with established growth and niche-market leadership.
- Basham personally concentrates on industrials and consumer companies.
- Geography: U.S. and Canada, lower middle market.
- What earns a "yes": durable, cash-generative businesses with a strong management team Sentinel can back, rather than early-stage, pre-revenue technology bets.
