Background

Pascal Voulton is a French venture-capital and private-equity executive who has led Sofimac, one of the oldest regional investment houses in France (founded in Clermont-Ferrand in 1977). He trained as an engineer, earning a degree in information technologies from ENSTA (École Nationale Supérieure de Techniques Avancées, ParisTech) in the mid-1980s, and subsequently studied at Sciences Po Paris (Institut d'Études Politiques de Paris). Before moving into finance he spent roughly a dozen years in the information-technology sector before transitioning into venture capital.

He has served as President of the Management Board (Président du directoire) of Sofimac Partners since February 2004, and as President of Sofimac Innovation, the group's venture arm specialised in technology and innovation investing. Under his leadership Sofimac grew to around €750 million in assets under management, a team of ~32 professionals across offices in Clermont-Ferrand, Marseille, Aix-en-Provence, Lyon, Orléans, Paris and Rennes, and a track record of having supported roughly 300 companies. Corporate registries also list him as a director/president of related entities including Olympe (Participations) and as chairman of the board (président du conseil d'administration) of portfolio company Aurora Sterilisation.

In 2020 Sofimac entered exclusive negotiations to combine with Paris-based UI Investissement, a deal that merged the two firms to create a multi-sector, multi-regional private-equity and venture leader targeting roughly €2 billion in assets under management (~€1.75bn at announcement). Voulton joined the board of directors of the combined group; the merged UI Investissement platform has since ranked among France's most active deeptech and health investors (reported ~153 deeptech/health investments between 2019 and 2024).

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Backs deeptech and breakthrough-innovation startups, frequently spun out of universities, engineering schools ("grandes écoles") and research labs, across electronics, materials, engineering sciences, digital and health/life sciences.
  • Invests primarily at seed / early stage ("amorçage" and capital-innovation), typically ~10 new deeptech deals per year via dedicated funds.
  • Runs thesis-driven academic-partnership funds — e.g. Pertinence Invest 2 (~€70M target), built with a consortium of universities, engineering schools, research labs and industrial partners, focused on Engineering Sciences and Health/Nutrition.
  • Combines regional economic-development impact with venture returns — a long-standing Sofimac hallmark of financing SMEs and startups across French regions rather than concentrating solely in Paris.
  • On what makes a startup investable, Voulton stresses the team and ecosystem over the lone founder: *"Ne partez pas seul dans cette aventure, entourez-vous de personnes compétentes et de confiance"* ("Don't go it alone in this venture — surround yourself with competent, trustworthy people"), and emphasises resilience through failure.

Notable Investments

  • Mob-Energy — INSA Lyon spin-off (founded 2018) building autonomous mobile robots for smart EV charging; Sofimac Innovation led/participated in its ~€2.1M funding round (first deal of the Pertinence Invest 2 fund).
  • Materr'Up — cleantech developing low-carbon clay-based concrete to cut construction's environmental footprint; Sofimac Innovation entered its capital.
  • Futura Gaia — deeptech/agritech (vertical/rotary "geoponic" farming), part of the Sofimac Innovation engineering-sciences & ecotech portfolio.
  • i-SEP — Nantes-based medtech (intra-operative blood auto-transfusion device); listed among Voulton's associated investment experience.
  • Broader Sofimac/UI platform: ~300 companies supported over the firm's history across deeptech, health and regional private equity.
