Background
Pat Kenealy is a Co-Founder and Venture Partner at Ridge Ventures, the San Francisco early-stage firm that was rebranded from IDG Ventures USA. He has been investing alongside the Ridge team — a group that includes Alex Rosen and Phil Sanderson — for well over a decade, making him one of the longest-tenured members of the partnership. He holds a BA in Economics from Harvard University.
Before his venture career, Kenealy spent roughly 20 years as an operator at International Data Group (IDG), the technology media, market research, and events company. There he rose from founder and CEO of IDG's Digital News Publishing subsidiary, to Publisher and CEO of the PC World Communications subsidiary, and ultimately to CEO of IDG itself, where he oversaw media, market-research, and event businesses across more than 50 countries. That operating background — deep in technology publishing and the buyer side of IT — informs how he backs and advises founders today.
On the investing side, Kenealy founded and served as Managing General Partner of IDG Ventures in San Francisco and was a founder/general partner of the affiliated IDG Ventures Atlantic (Boston) and IDG Ventures Europe (London). Across his career he has made more than a dozen early-stage IT and new-media investments that, per the firm, collectively returned several times their committed capital. He describes himself simply as a "media business sage, student of computer history, operator turned investor, father of three."
Today at Ridge he continues to serve as a board director or observer for portfolio companies, currently including Espresa, nWay, Upwave, and Yesware, contributing his operating experience and Fortune-500 relationships to the firm's revenue-first, enterprise-software strategy.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Backs experienced entrepreneurs building "revenue-first" enterprise software — Ridge favors demonstrated traction and product-market signal over hype.
- Invests primarily at the late Seed / early Series A stage, with firm checks generally in the $2M–$7M range.
- The firm emphasizes founder character and alignment over deal terms, and leverages a network of 100+ Fortune 500 / senior enterprise executives to connect founders with real customers and validate demand early ("substance over hype").
- Sector heritage spans enterprise/B2B software, digital media, and consumer internet platforms, reflecting Kenealy's IDG media roots and the firm's broader enterprise focus.
