Background

Patrick Michael Byrne (born November 29, 1962, in Fort Wayne, Indiana) is an American entrepreneur best known for founding the online retailer Overstock.com. He earned a bachelor's degree with dual majors in Western philosophy and Asian studies from Dartmouth College, a master's from King's College, Cambridge as a Marshall Scholar, and a Ph.D. in philosophy from Stanford University (1996). His father, John J. Byrne, was the GEICO and Berkshire Hathaway insurance executive, and Byrne has described Warren Buffett — whom he met as a teenager — as "one of his life's great teachers." In 1997–1998 he ran Berkshire-owned Fechheimer Brothers, and earlier led industrial-torch maker Centricut.

In spring 1999 Byrne invested roughly $7 million for a controlling stake in D2-Discounts Direct, which he renamed Overstock.com and took public via a Dutch-auction IPO in 2002. He served as CEO for two decades (1999–2019), building the company to roughly $1.8 billion in annual revenue. Byrne became an outspoken crusader against naked short selling, founding the "Deep Capture" website — litigation over which led to a 2016 Canadian defamation judgment against him.

Byrne is among the earliest corporate adopters of cryptocurrency. In 2014 Overstock became the first major retailer to accept Bitcoin, and he founded Medici Ventures to incubate and invest in blockchain startups, along with tZERO, a blockchain-based securities trading platform (Intercontinental Exchange took a minority stake in tZERO in 2022). In 2015 he became the first person to purchase a digital bond entirely on the Bitcoin blockchain.

Byrne resigned from Overstock in August 2019 and has since become a prominent political figure, financing the 2021 Maricopa County (Arizona) election "audit," self-publishing *The Deep Rig*, and founding the political nonprofit The America Project. He is currently a defendant in major defamation cases (Dominion Voting Systems; Hunter Biden), and reportedly left the U.S. for Dubai in 2024.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests almost exclusively in blockchain and distributed-ledger applications, treating the technology as a tool for individual liberty and decentralization of financial and government systems — consistent with his libertarian, free-market ideology.
  • Backed companies that rebuild financial-market and trust infrastructure on-chain: securities trading, clearing/settlement, digital identity, and tokenized assets.
  • Strong interest in applying blockchain to public-goods and "trust" problems — secure voting, land/property title registration, and supply-chain provenance.
  • Deployed capital through Medici Ventures (Overstock's venture arm) rather than a traditional fund, often taking strategic stakes alongside Overstock's balance sheet; he has described himself as "self-funded" and willing to "fund this army of various strange people."
  • Says yes to founders building infrastructure that removes intermediaries and centralized gatekeepers, particularly in capital markets and identity.
