Background

Patrick Mamathuba is a CFA charterholder who leads STANLIB's Alternative Investments franchise as Chief Investment Officer. STANLIB is one of South Africa's largest asset managers (part of the Standard Bank / Liberty group), and Mamathuba's division oversees non-traditional asset classes including infrastructure, private equity, private real estate, high-yield credit and hedge funds. He is also a director of STANLIB Collective Investments Limited and has been listed as a fund manager on STANLIB/1nvest index products.

His earlier career was in fixed income: he worked as a fixed-income trader at Transnet Treasury and at the South African Reserve Bank before moving into asset management. Academically, he holds a B.Com from the University of Cape Town and a B.Com Honours from UNISA, and completed the CFA Charter.

Beyond his day job, Mamathuba serves as a trustee of the Student Sponsorship Programme (SSP) South Africa, a non-profit that provides academic scholarships and leadership development to disadvantaged students — a governance/board role reflecting his involvement in education and development in South Africa.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests through institutional alternative-asset vehicles — private equity, infrastructure, private real estate, high-yield credit and hedge funds — rather than writing personal angel or seed checks.
  • Champions alternatives as portfolio diversifiers, arguing investors must weigh the full risk-return mix: he has said a private equity investment can carry *lower* risk than listed equities while offering *better* returns, and that infrastructure carries "completely different" risks worth diversifying into.
  • Believes South African uptake of alternatives is still "gaining traction," and expects appetite to grow as historically strong listed-equity returns moderate.
  • Strong pan-African conviction: STANLIB's alternatives strategy is explicitly built around long-term African growth, with capital earmarked for the broader continent, not just South Africa.
  • On the EXEO Capital deal he framed the logic as capability-building: *"This transaction is an ideal fit… It strengthens our existing capabilities and introduces new ones where we believe there will be strong future demand based on global trends."*

Notable Investments

  • EXEO Capital — In March 2016 STANLIB (under Mamathuba as CIO – Alternative Investments) took a partnership stake in EXEO Capital, an independent pan-African private equity manager launched by the founders of the Agri-Vie agribusiness fund. The tie-up added private equity capability alongside STANLIB's existing infrastructure, high-yield credit and direct-property offerings.
  • Agri-Vie Fund II — The EXEO partnership was linked to the launch of Agri-Vie Fund II (food & agribusiness across Sub-Saharan Africa), expected to raise ~USD 275m at the time; EXEO went on to manage roughly USD 300m in AUM across Cape Town, Nairobi and Mauritius offices.
  • STANLIB Infrastructure Private Equity Fund — STANLIB's flagship infrastructure PE program (final close reported around R1.2bn), part of the alternatives platform Mamathuba heads.
  • STANLIB Alternative Assets Fund-of-Funds — Diversified vehicle investing across infrastructure, private equity, private real estate and hedge funds.
