Background
Patrick W. Phelps is the President, CEO and a Board Member of SOFIE Biosciences, a molecular-imaging and radiopharmaceutical company he helped found in 2009. He joined a group of scientists, physicians and industry professionals to spin the company out of UCLA and Caltech with the goal of making PET (positron emission tomography) imaging and radiopharmaceuticals more broadly available to researchers, clinicians and drug developers through new generations of molecular-imaging diagnostics, radio-therapeutics and devices. He has spent more than a decade with the company, initially leading business development and product launches before being elevated to CEO.
Before SOFIE, Phelps built his career in the diagnostic-imaging industry. He was part of the Siemens Healthcare team that built the preclinical molecular-imaging division, where he drove adoption of two generations of small-animal PET, CT and SPECT imaging systems into the life-science and pharmaceutical markets. Earlier, he held roles in clinical sales, sales support, product management and marketing at CTI Molecular Imaging (acquired by Siemens in 2006), including serving as a Global Sales Support Manager and contributing to the industry's shift toward clinical hybrid imaging such as PET/CT.
Phelps holds a degree in Biology from the University of Colorado. Under his leadership, SOFIE grew from a university spinout into an operating company with roughly $65M in 2018 sales, and the firm has advanced into late-stage clinical development with its [18F]FAPI-74 radiopharmaceutical program. He is also listed in regional life-science networks such as Biocom.
It is worth noting that Phelps's "angel investor" designation derives chiefly from his own financial participation in SOFIE (recorded as an individual/angel investment on October 17, 2014) rather than from an active, diversified angel-investing practice. Public deal databases show essentially one associated portfolio company — SOFIE itself.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Classified by Crunchbase as an Individual/Angel investor operating at the Seed stage, with a single associated portfolio company (SOFIE Biosciences).
- Domain expertise and interest centered on molecular imaging, PET diagnostics, radiopharmaceuticals and radio-theranostics — the sectors in which he has spent his entire career.
- His own capital deployment is documented as a founder/insider investment in SOFIE, reflecting conviction in the molecular-imaging and theranostics space he leads.
- No publicly stated independent angel thesis, check-size range, or target-company criteria could be verified; any broader angel activity appears limited.
Notable Investments
- SOFIE Biosciences (Sofie Biosciences) — Molecular-imaging and radiopharmaceutical company spun out of UCLA/Caltech; Phelps is co-founder and CEO and is recorded as an individual/angel investor (investment dated October 17, 2014).
