Background
Patrick Sugito Walujo (born 1975) is an Indonesian investor and one of Southeast Asia's most prominent private-equity figures. He attended Canisius College high school in Jakarta before earning a Bachelor of Science in Operations Research and Industrial Engineering from Cornell University in 1997. He began his career at Goldman Sachs & Co. as an analyst (roughly 1997–2000), working in banking roles that spanned London and New York, then moved to Tokyo as Senior Vice President at Pacific Century Ventures until 2003.
In 2003 Walujo co-founded Northstar Group, a Singapore-headquartered private-equity firm dedicated to growth-company investing in Indonesia and, to a lesser extent, the rest of Southeast Asia. Under his leadership Northstar became one of the region's largest private investors, managing more than US$2.5 billion in committed equity capital across multiple private-equity funds and a venture vehicle. The firm is partly owned by U.S. buyout giant TPG, an early strategic partner. Walujo was recognized as Ernst & Young Indonesia's "Young Entrepreneur of the Year" in 2009 and named "Businessman of the Year" by Forbes Indonesia in 2021.
In June 2023, Walujo stepped out of a pure investor role to become Group CEO of GoTo — the Indonesian tech giant formed from the merger of Gojek and Tokopedia, and a company Northstar had backed since Gojek's earliest rounds — succeeding Andre Soelistyo amid a leadership restructuring and profitability push. During his tenure GoTo divested a controlling stake in Tokopedia to TikTok (2023), sharply narrowed losses, and reached its first quarterly profit. In January 2025 the board extended his mandate through 2029. However, GoTo's shares fell more than 40% over his tenure, and in November 2025 co-founders and major shareholders (including SoftBank) pushed for a change; the board nominated COO Hans Patuwo to succeed him, with a shareholder vote set for December 17, 2025. Walujo had reportedly opposed a proposed Grab–GoTo merger that the new leadership is more open to. He remains associated with Northstar Group.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests primarily at the growth/expansion stage through Northstar's private-equity funds, targeting companies that can become category leaders in Indonesia and Southeast Asia.
- Core sectors: financial services/fintech, consumer & retail, technology/internet, and telecom/infrastructure — often backing strong operators and management teams to scale local franchises (e.g., the BTPN turnaround).
- Combines classic PE control/growth deals with early-stage venture bets made through NSI Ventures (later spun out as Openspace Ventures) and personal angel activity.
- Bullish on entrepreneurship in the region: *"If you have good ideas and if you are a good entrepreneur, there is a lot of capital available."*
- Says "yes" to backable founders with defensible market positions and a credible path to profitability — a theme he carried into GoTo's cost discipline and margin-focused strategy.
Notable Investments
- Gojek / GoTo — Early backer via NSI Ventures at Gojek's Series A (~US$400M valuation) and again at Series B in 2016 alongside KKR and Warburg Pincus; Gojek later merged with Tokopedia to form GoTo, which IPO'd in 2022. Walujo became GoTo's CEO in 2023.
- Bank BTPN (PT Bank BTPN Tbk) — Northstar's first deal (2008), acquired with TPG; assets grew roughly 10x over a decade under CEO Jerry Ng. A signature PE success.
- BFI Finance (PT BFI Finance Indonesia Tbk) — Multifinance company, invested 2011.
- Indomaret — Investment in Indonesia's leading convenience-store retailer.
- Trimegah Sekuritas (TRIM), Tugu Pratama Indonesia insurance (TUGU), Centratama Telekomunikasi (CENT) — Additional listed-company positions in the Indonesian portfolio.
