Background
Patrick Zhong is the Founding Managing Partner of M31 Capital, a global private equity firm that invests in next-generation companies and recognized global innovation leaders, many with strong ties to China. He has more than 20 years of experience spanning venture capital, private equity, buyouts, and public equity across a wide range of industries, and he sits at the intersection of global finance, technology, and geopolitics.
Zhong spent roughly seven years at Fosun Group as Senior Managing Director and Global Partner, where he led the Global Investment & Strategies Group and was credited with helping transform Fosun into a global investment platform. During that period he served as President of the China Momentum Fund and the Pramerica-Fosun China Opportunity Fund, CEO of Fosun Lifestyle Brands Group, Chairman of Fosun Media Group, and Chairman of Forbes China. (The stub title "President Assistant & Director, International Development Division" reflects an earlier or internal Fosun designation; his most widely documented Fosun role is Senior Managing Director & Global Partner.)
Before and after Fosun, Zhong held several senior investment and operating roles: Chief Investment Officer at Wanda Group (overseeing technology, media, consumer, and financial-services investments) and Co-CEO of Giant Networks, a leading Chinese technology company. Earlier in his career he was an investor at Wellington Management, where his fund became a top institutional shareholder in Tencent, Baidu, Alibaba, Ctrip, NetEase, and Focus Media, and he held earlier positions at RHJ Associates and Wasatch Advisors.
Zhong holds a bachelor's degree from China Foreign Affairs University in Beijing and an MBA from the University of Illinois, and he is a CFA charterholder. He is a frequent speaker at global forums including the Milken Institute Global Conference, SALT, the Future Investment Initiative (FII), and GCC–China summits.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Backs global innovation leaders and next-generation technology companies, typically at growth/pre-IPO stages rather than seed — M31's flagship USD fund closed at $450 million (2020).
- Concentrates on companies with strong China ties or the ability to scale in China, plus category-defining technology and healthcare names globally.
- Emphasizes the interplay of politics, capital, and technology — Zhong frames current opportunity as "innovation-driven," particularly in AI and its structural impact on energy and global markets.
- Increasingly focused on the China–Gulf/GCC and China–ASEAN capital corridors, positioning M31 as a bridge for cross-border capital flows.
Notable Investments
- ByteDance — parent of TikTok/Douyin; one of M31's flagship technology positions.
- Grail — cancer early-detection / liquid-biopsy company (life sciences).
- SuperMonkey (超级猩猩) — Chinese boutique fitness / group-workout chain.
- (Via Wellington earlier in his career) early institutional stakes in Tencent, Baidu, Alibaba, Ctrip, NetEase, and Focus Media.
