Background
Patty Gabric Nykodym is the Chief Financial Officer and Chief Compliance Officer of FFL Partners, the San Francisco–based private equity firm founded in 1997 as Friedman Fleischer & Lowe. She joined FFL as CFO in 2008 and oversees all aspects of the firm's accounting, tax, financial management, and reporting, while as Chief Compliance Officer she is responsible for the firm's legal and regulatory compliance functions.
Before joining FFL, Nykodym spent more than 20 years at Deloitte & Touche LLP, where she led professional services for financial-services clients including private equity firms, venture capital funds, hedge funds, funds of funds, registered investment advisors, and broker-dealers. That long tenure serving alternative-asset managers gave her deep expertise in fund accounting, valuation, and the regulatory environment that governs private-fund managers — directly relevant to the CFO/CCO role she has held at FFL for more than 15 years.
She earned a B.S. in Accounting from Illinois State University. She has been recognized within the industry as one of the finance executives who helped shape the operational side of private equity, and she speaks at industry events such as the Kayo Women's Private Funds Summit, where in 2025 she participated on the "CFO Playbook: Conquering Common Challenges" panel.
FFL Partners today manages roughly $5.4 billion in assets and describes itself as a "hyperspecialized, thematic investor" concentrated in two complementary sectors — Healthcare and Tech-Enabled Services. As CFO/CCO, Nykodym sits on the firm's operations/finance side rather than its investment team.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Firm strategy (FFL), not a personal angel thesis: FFL is a middle-market control investor focused on narrowly targeted sub-sectors within Healthcare and Tech-Enabled Services.
- Stage & structure: Control or significant-minority equity stakes in established middle-market companies — not early-stage, seed, or angel deals.
- Check size: FFL Capital Partners V (closed at over $900 million) makes equity investments of roughly $50M–$200M per transaction.
- Sourcing approach: FFL uses a proprietary "Sector Exploration and Expertise Development (SEED)" strategy to identify and build conviction in specific sub-sectors before investing.
- Nykodym's role in the thesis: As CFO and Chief Compliance Officer she is responsible for fund finance, reporting, and regulatory compliance — she does not personally set investment strategy or write checks into companies.
