Paul Achleitner

Paul M. Achleitner is an Austrian financier, born 28 September 1956 in Linz, Austria, and now based in Munich. He studied business administration, economics, law, and social sciences at the University of St. Gallen, where he also earned his doctorate, and was a visiting fellow at Harvard Business School from 1982 to 1984. He began his career in management consulting at Bain & Company before moving into investment banking.

At Goldman Sachs he rose to run the firm's German operation as managing director of its German subsidiary during the 1990s, playing a role in some of the era's largest German corporate transactions. In 2000 he joined the management board of insurer Allianz AG as Chief Financial Officer, responsible for finance and investments, a post he held until 2012. He steered Allianz's balance sheet through the aftermath of its Dresdner Bank acquisition and the global financial crisis.

From May 2012 to May 2022 Achleitner served as Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Deutsche Bank AG, overseeing a turbulent decade that included several CEO transitions (Anshu Jain/Jürgen Fitschen, John Cryan, and Christian Sewing) and a deep restructuring of the bank. He was for a time among the highest-paid supervisory board chairs of Germany's largest listed companies. Since stepping down he has chaired Deutsche Bank's Global Advisory Board.

Beyond his executive record he holds numerous governance and advisory roles: member of the supervisory board of Bayer AG, member of the International Advisory Board of Hakluyt & Company (since 2022), honorary professor of investment banking at WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management, and trustee/board roles connected to the Brookings Institution, Bocconi University, and the Munich Security Conference. He is married to Ann-Kristin Achleitner, a professor of entrepreneurial finance at the Technical University of Munich, with whom he frequently co-invests.
