Paul Cannings

Paul Cannings is a Partner at YFM Equity Partners, an independent UK private equity firm founded in 1982 that provides growth capital and buyout funding to small and medium-sized businesses across Britain. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Economics from the University of Bristol (1983–1986) and has more than 25 years of experience investing in small, growing UK companies.

He began his private equity career at the international firm 3i plc, where he spent roughly 14 years — including a period as Director and Investment Director in 3i's Cambridge office (1990–2004) — leading its smaller buyout and growth capital team. He subsequently joined YFM, where he served as Head of New Investments (later described as Director overseeing new investments and portfolio management) before becoming a Partner. Over his career he has held numerous non-executive director positions on portfolio company boards, including Harvey Jones Kitchens, Go Outdoors Limited, Deep-Secure Ltd, and Harris Hill (charity recruitment specialists).

Since April 2022, Paul has led YFM's ESG and Sustainable Investment programme and sits on the firm's Investment Committee. His interest in responsible and social investment extends well beyond YFM: he serves on the board of Social and Sustainable Capital (SASC), a non-profit that funds charities and social enterprises, where he chairs the Investment Committee and has acted as the board representative for Big Society Capital. He also spent seven years on the Investment Committee of CAF Venturesome, two of them as chair.

• Firm check size of £3m–£15m, with reserves for follow-on funding to support scale-up.
