Background
Paul Lyons is a co-founder and owner (partner) of Denargo Capital LLC, a Colorado-based private equity firm formed in 2003 by Paul Lyons, Pal Berg, and Tom Heule to continue a shared track record of buying, growing, and improving lower-middle-market companies. Lyons joined Denargo in January 2005. According to the firm, its three founding partners each have more than 20 years of corporate-finance and private-equity experience and have worked together as a team for over a decade.
Lyons has been active in the private equity and mezzanine markets since the early 1990s. He was a Principal at the Hanifen Imhoff Mezzanine Fund, a $60 million fund, and a General Partner at the Rocky Mountain Mezzanine Fund, a $120 million private-equity mezzanine fund serving the lower middle market. His work has centered on senior and mezzanine debt transactions — origination, pricing, credit evaluation, and documentation — across a broad cross-section of industries. Earlier, he provided investment-banking services to Rocky Mountain–region companies as a consultant and as Manager of the Corporate Finance Department for the Denver office of Kirkpatrick Pettis.
Before his private-equity career, Lyons was associated with Mitsubishi Trust, where as an Executive Vice President he developed and managed the bank's merchant banking activity. He began his career at Irving Trust Company in New York, where he spent 15 years in commercial banking and rose to a senior management position within the bank's large-corporate banking division.
Lyons earned a B.S. in Business Administration from Georgetown University and served in the United States Marine Corps.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- What they buy: Denargo makes "direct, control investments primarily in later-stage companies with operating profits," emphasizing niche manufacturing, value-added distribution, and service businesses.
- Deal types: Management buyouts (including generational transitions of ownership), recapitalizations, industry consolidations, and growth/acquisition situations.
- Approach: In the firm's words, they are "proactive investors, bringing more than capital to the transaction," taking "an active role in developing and implementing the strategy for growth and profitability," and are "flexible and creative when creating capital structures so that the goals of all the parties are addressed."
- What makes them say yes: "Hard-to-find investment opportunities that possess a strong platform to build future value" — situations where they can "substantially increase shareholder value."
- Alignment: As an equity sponsor, Denargo grants "equity participation and operating autonomy to key executives," signaling a preference for backing and partnering with strong management teams rather than replacing them.
- Scale/experience: The firm states its team members have made in excess of 300 investments and managed transactions involving over $4 billion of capital.
- *(Note: Denargo does not publish a fixed check size; given its buyout/control profile it operates well above typical angel/seed check sizes.)*
