Background
Paul Charles Wesch was born in Seattle on November 20, 1954, and grew up in Huntsville, Alabama, graduating from Butler High School in 1973. He earned two undergraduate degrees and a law degree (JD, 1980) from the University of Alabama, and subsequently added an LL.M. in Taxation, also from the University of Alabama. Upon graduating from law school in 1980, he joined the Stanard and Mills law firm in Mobile.
In 1984, Wesch joined The Mitchell Company, a Mobile-based real estate development firm, where he spent nearly three decades as a real estate developer and executive, serving as Executive Vice-President, General Counsel, and a member of the Board of Directors. He was a member of the American Bar Association, the Alabama State Bar, and the Mobile Bar Association.
In 2013, newly elected Mayor Sandy Stimpson recruited Wesch to become the City of Mobile's Executive Director of Finance. His finance and administrative expertise made him central to Stimpson's revitalization agenda, and in 2016 the mayor additionally named him Chief of Staff, a dual role he held (later as Acting Chief of Staff) until his death. In these capacities he oversaw the city's budget, financial reporting, and the investment/management of municipal public funds — the basis for any "Investment Committee" designation.
Wesch died on December 27, 2020, at age 66, in a single-vehicle crash on Bellingrath Road south of Theodore, Alabama, when his vehicle left the road, overturned, and struck a tree. A memorial mass was held January 4, 2021, at the Cathedral-Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Mobile. Mayor Stimpson called him "one of my very first administrative appointees" and "irreplaceable."
