Background

Paulo Humberg is one of the pioneers of the Brazilian internet and a serial entrepreneur with three decades of activity in e-commerce and digital media. He began as Marketing Superintendent at Lojas Americanas, where he helped launch Shoptime (a TV/home-shopping and early e-commerce channel) in 1994 — frequently cited as one of Brazil's first e-commerce operations, later absorbed into B2W. In 1999 he founded Lokau.com, described as the first online auction/marketplace site in Brazil (and Latin America). He went on to create Brandsclub (a private-sales/outlet club for branded fashion, launched circa 2009 with ~R$10 million in investment) and Clickon (a leading Brazilian collective-purchasing/group-buying platform), and was associated with the early portal iBest.

Around the mid-2000s Humberg co-founded A5 (A5 Internet Investments / A5 Capital Partners) with Renato Ramalho — a "builder/venture" firm in São Paulo focused on developing internet, e-commerce, digital media and financial-services companies, working hands-on with founders. In December 2019, A5 Capital Partners merged with Inseed Investimentos to form KPTL, a venture capital manager with roughly R$1 billion under management and a portfolio that has spanned well over 100 early-stage companies. Humberg serves as Chairman of KPTL but, per Brazil Journal, is a minority stakeholder who is not involved in day-to-day operations.

Since 2017, his primary operating venture has been KeyCash, a real-estate-backed credit (home-equity) fintech he co-founded with Clarissa Vieira (ex-EY) and Alessandro Silva (formerly of the ZAP/Viva Real group), where he is founder and CEO/Chairman. KeyCash uses AI and predictive data to underwrite credit secured by property; Humberg has publicly called it potentially his "biggest business to date" given the scale of Brazil's credit market.

Alongside these operating roles, Humberg has long acted as an angel investor (often via A5 and with peers such as Flávio Jansen), backing internet-focused startups at the seed stage.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests primarily at seed / early stage in internet, e-commerce, marketplace, digital-media and fintech businesses in Brazil.
  • Looks for companies with a clear path to revenue and meaningful growth potential — on the Guiato deal he said the model attracted him "precisely because it has a clear source of revenue generation and significant growth potential."
  • Hands-on, operator-led approach: A5 positioned itself as a "builder" working closely with entrepreneurs on company-building and leadership development, reflecting Humberg's background as a multi-time founder rather than a passive financier.
  • Through KPTL (the firm A5 merged into), the broader thesis favors durable, science/technology-backed businesses over "unicorn-chasing," concentrating in areas such as agrotech, healthtech and govtech (with the fund writing checks up to ~R$80M at Series A/B — fund-level, not his personal angel checks).
  • Strong personal conviction in credit and proptech/fintech in Brazil ("a revolution in credit is going to happen in Brazil"), consistent with his KeyCash bet.

Notable Investments

  • KeyCash — real-estate-backed credit fintech he co-founded (2017); raised ~R$185M and targeted billions in home-equity originations.
  • Guiato — geolocation platform distributing retail store flyers online/mobile; angel investment (July 2012) alongside Flávio Jansen via A5.
  • Mercado.etc — creative-economy / marketplace startup backed by A5.
  • E2E — fashion-focused e-commerce platform; received ~R$5 million from A5 Internet Investments.
  • Zarpo — online travel agency (A5 Capital Partners portfolio).
  • Q!Bazar — virtual multi-brand outlet (A5 Capital Partners portfolio).
  • Mark 2 Market — treasury/financial management software (A5 Capital Partners portfolio).
  • KPTL portfolio (post-merger) — broad early-stage portfolio of 50+ companies across agrotech, healthtech and govtech (e.g., Inseed's exit of Rizoflora, agricultural biodefensives, sold to Stoller in 2016).
