Background
Peter Cartwright is a founding partner of AnaCap Financial Partners, the London-based private equity firm focused on software, technology and services within the European financial-services sector. He joined the firm as a Partner in 2006 at the very start of its creation and went on to lead AnaCap's private equity business until 2022. He is a member of the firm's Investment Recommendation Committee and works hands-on to support value creation across portfolio companies, historically overseeing the Mergers & Acquisitions, Business Services, and Risk & Liability Management activities.
Cartwright has spent his entire career in financial services, with more than 20 years of operational experience across a diverse range of financial-services businesses. Before AnaCap he held several executive roles in the sector, including Commercial Director within a leading private equity-backed insurance-services provider (Direct Group). Earlier in his career he held senior roles within GMAC and the UK Consumer Finance division of GE Capital — an operating background his co-founder Joe Giannamore has publicly described as "the kind of hands-on, problem-solving experience that is still too rare in the private equity industry."
In February 2011, AnaCap appointed Cartwright as Co-Managing Partner, working alongside co-founder Joe Giannamore. His profile is that of an operator-investor rather than a purely financial dealmaker: much of his contribution centers on engaging with portfolio companies before and after investment to enhance operational performance and drive growth.
Note: The stub data labeling him an "Angel Investor" investing at "Seed Round" is incorrect. AnaCap is an institutional private equity manager that acquires control and significant stakes in established European financial-services companies via committed buyout funds — a very different profile from early-stage angel/seed investing.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests through AnaCap's pan-European private equity funds (e.g., AFP III, ABO I, ABO II), targeting the European financial-services ecosystem rather than seed-stage startups.
- Core thesis (per AnaCap's own materials): seek "investment opportunities with high growth potential and/or restructuring needs in the financial services market," deploying capital to facilitate growth strategies or business-model transformation.
- Sector concentration is heaviest in financial services and insurance, with a strong recent tilt toward financial software, payments, RegTech/WealthTech, and insurance broking.
- Operationally driven approach: Cartwright personally focuses on engaging portfolio companies "before and after investment to enhance operational performance and drive growth," reflecting his operator background.
- Geography spans the UK and Continental Europe (Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Nordics, Poland/CEE).
