Background

Peter Fries is Chairman of the Executive Board (Vorsitzender der Geschäftsleitung) of PKG Pensionskasse, a Lucerne-based independent collective pension foundation and one of Switzerland's leading occupational-pension providers for small and medium-sized enterprises. He assumed the top role on 1 July 2018, succeeding long-serving CEO Jean Wey. At the time of appointment, PKG counted roughly 1,500 affiliated companies, about 30,000 insured members and 4,200 pensioners, with total assets under management of approximately CHF 6.4 billion.

Fries is a long-tenured insider: he joined PKG in 1998, was appointed Head of Pension Provision (Leiter Vorsorge) and a member of the Executive Board in 2005, and thus had spent two decades at the fund (13 years on management) before becoming CEO. He is a trained business economist (Betriebsökonom HWV) and holds a Master's degree in Social Insurance Management, complemented by qualifications as a federally certified financial-planning expert. He was born around 1965–1966 (reported as 54 in May 2020).

As CEO he leads the fund's overall strategy, including the gradual reduction of the conversion rate to maintain financial equilibrium and limit cross-subsidization between active members and retirees — a direction the foundation board (chaired by Peter Marending) framed as aligning benefits with economic realities. Under his leadership PKG posted strong investment years, including an 11.81% return in 2019 and 8.62% in 2021 (coverage ratio 123.2% at end-2021). During the COVID-19 lockdowns, PKG voluntarily reduced commercial rents in its directly held properties for affected SME tenants.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests as a fiduciary for pension beneficiaries, not as a venture backer — the mandate is long-term financial security and stable returns for insured SMEs.
  • States a "prudent, long-term and sustainable" investment strategy, emphasizing liquid, easily tradable, high-quality assets and broad diversification across asset classes, markets, currencies, sectors and industries.
  • Integrates ESG (ecological, social and governance) criteria across the portfolio, including an ESG-aligned strategy for directly held real estate; PKG published its first sustainability report and, around 2022, decided to exit commodity investments.
  • Fries has described PKG's approach in terms of efficiency, sustainability and flexibility, and framed the "proven strategy" as good guidance for the future after the strong 2021 result.

Notable Investments

  • Direct real estate portfolio — PKG holds property directly; it applied an ESG-compliant real estate strategy and cut SME tenants' commercial rents by up to two-thirds during COVID lockdowns.
  • Diversified securities portfolio — bonds, equities and other liquid asset classes managed for long-term returns (e.g., 11.81% in 2019; 8.62% in 2021).
  • *No startup or seed-stage venture investments were found; PKG's activity is institutional multi-asset allocation rather than direct company deals.*
