Background

Peter J. Nanula is Chairman and CEO of Concert Golf Partners, a boutique owner-operator of upscale private golf and country clubs. Concert Golf says it was formed in 2011 by Nanula and Susan Dunnavant, and its model is to acquire or recapitalize private clubs with long-term equity capital, pay off debt, and fund amenities and member-experience improvements.

Before Concert Golf, Nanula founded and led Arnold Palmer Golf Management. Sports Business Journal reported that he became president and CEO in 1993 after earlier work as an attorney at O’Melveny & Myers from 1987 to 1990 and as a principal at E.M. Warburg, Pincus & Co. from 1990 to 1993. Concert Golf’s own biography says that at Arnold Palmer Golf Management he converted the company into an owner-operator of 30 golf courses and country clubs with 2,000 employees from 1993 to 2000.

Nanula later co-founded Concert Capital Partners, where Kando/VC DATALAB lists him as co-founder and Managing Partner. That profile says he brought 13 years of investor and entrepreneur experience, participated in six healthcare and business-services investments while at Warburg Pincus, and served as a director of Product Action International, Control Point Solutions, and Print, Inc.

He earned an AB in government from Harvard University in 1984 and a JD from Harvard Law School in 1987, according to Sports Business Journal.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Concert Golf’s stated mission is to preserve private clubs by investing capital in amenities, service levels, and overall member experience.
  • Nanula’s current focus is highly specialized: private golf and country clubs that can benefit from long-term ownership, debt repayment, capital reserves, and professional club operations.
  • Concert Golf emphasizes all-cash closings from committed funds, a two-to-four-month recapitalization process, and the ability to make decisions without lengthy committee approvals.
  • The firm says it has invested in, operated, or made loans on 100+ golf properties and that it prefers to preserve each club’s identity, culture, traditions, and private status.
  • Concert Golf’s FAQs frame the value proposition around financial stability, higher profitability, more members, capital improvements, no member assessments, and better member experience.
  • In Nanula’s words, Concert is “committed to preserving and enhancing premier private country clubs across America.”
  • Earlier Concert Capital Partners materials show a broader investment mandate across seed, Series A and later rounds, mezzanine, pre-IPO, and buyout/acquisition financings.
