Background

Peter Promnitz is a qualified actuary with more than 40 years' experience in the superannuation and investment sectors. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Statistics from the University of Adelaide (studied 1970–1973). The bulk of his executive career was spent at Mercer, the global consulting arm of Marsh & McLennan, where he rose to become Asia-Pacific CEO (2007–2012) and a member of Mercer's global Executive Committee. He was also the first independent Chairman of Marsh & McLennan Companies Inc. in Australia (2009–2013), retiring from his Mercer executive role in December 2012.

After leaving Mercer, Promnitz built a second career as a professional non-executive director and chairman across Australian financial-services and mutual organisations. He joined the board of Australian Unity Limited on 1 January 2013, was named Deputy Chairman and Chairman-designate in July 2015, became Chairman on 30 March 2016, and retired from that role and the board at the October 2022 AGM (on 26 October 2022), handing the chair to Lisa Chung.

Alongside Australian Unity, Promnitz has held numerous financial-services directorships. He was Chairman of the ASX-listed SFG Australia Limited and a non-executive director of Shadforth Financial Group. In the superannuation space he joined the NULIS Nominees (Australia) Limited board (the trustee for NAB/MLC superannuation) as an independent director in December 2017 and became its Chair in July 2018. He has also served on the boards of Big Sky Building Society, Lifeplan Australia Friendly Society, Elite Superannuation Services, and — from 2016 — Warakirri Asset Management Pty Ltd and Warakirri Holdings, an investment manager known for institutional and agricultural (dairy) assets.

The one clearly startup-adjacent role in his public record is Chair of the Advisory Board of Career Money Life, an Australian HR/employee-benefits platform, a position he has held since around 2016.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • No documented angel or seed-stage investing. Despite the stub's "Angel Investors / Seed Round" tags, no source reviewed shows Promnitz making personal early-stage startup investments. His documented activity is institutional board governance, not venture check-writing.
  • His domain expertise is concentrated in superannuation, wealth/financial advice, life insurance and funds management — sectors where he has operated as executive, chairman and trustee-director.
  • Through Warakirri Asset Management he is associated with institutional investment strategies including Australian agriculture and dairy.
  • On career and leadership, in his own words (as Career Money Life Advisory Board Chair) he advises that it is "passion you should look for in your career — take on a role you feel you can make a difference in."

Notable Investments

  • Australian Unity Limited — Chairman 2016–2022; mutual providing health, wealth and aged-care/retirement-living services.
  • NULIS Nominees (Australia) Limited — Chair from 2018; superannuation trustee for the NAB/MLC group.
  • SFG Australia Limited — former Chairman of the ASX-listed wealth-management group (later merged into IOOF).
  • Warakirri Asset Management / Warakirri Holdings — non-executive director from 2016; institutional and agricultural funds manager.
  • Career Money Life — Chair of the Advisory Board; HR/employee-benefits platform (his closest link to an early-stage company).
  • Additional board seats: Big Sky Building Society, Lifeplan Australia Friendly Society, Elite Superannuation Services, Shadforth Financial Group.
