Background
Peter Singh is a Managing Director at Metalmark Capital, a New York–based middle-market private equity firm that spun out of Morgan Stanley in 2004 (originally founded as Morgan Stanley Capital Partners in 1985). Per the firm's own team page, "Peter Singh is a Managing Director with Metalmark Capital." He graduated with an A.B. with Honors in Economics from Harvard University.
Singh began his career as an Analyst in the mergers-and-acquisitions group at Gleacher & Company before joining Metalmark as an Associate. His career has been closely tied to the firm's energy portfolio: he served for several years as Chief Financial Officer of Pacific Coast Energy Company, a Metalmark portfolio company and independent crude-oil producer in Southern California. He subsequently served as Chief Financial Officer and was a founding executive of Bridge Energy LLC before returning to Metalmark's investment team.
In his current role, Singh sits on the boards of Metalmark portfolio companies, serving as a director of Northeast Natural Energy (an Appalachian Basin natural-gas producer) and Premier Research (a clinical-stage contract research organization in healthcare). This board mix reflects Metalmark's dual concentration in energy and healthcare, though Singh's operating and investing background is weighted heavily toward energy and energy services.
Note: some contact aggregators list Singh's title as "Vice President," but Metalmark's official website identifies him as a Managing Director; the firm's separate Vice Presidents are Josh Hyman, Nitin Saxena, and Jared Fogel.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests in founder- and family-owned middle-market businesses in North America, described by the firm as "growth equity" investing that seeks "to build long-term value through active, collaborative partnerships with business owners, founders and executives."
- Metalmark positions itself as "a patient and diligent partner intent on building long-term enterprises" rather than a short-hold financial buyer.
- Core sectors are energy, infrastructure/water, and healthcare; the firm has pursued an "acquisition platform" (buy-and-build) model, having acquired 120+ add-on businesses that collectively added over $1B in annualized EBITDA.
- Singh's personal focus, given his CFO roles at Pacific Coast Energy and Bridge Energy and his board seats, is energy and energy-services investments — upstream oil & gas, gathering/logistics, and energy-services platforms.
- This is a control/growth-equity mandate, not angel or seed investing; founders seeking pre-seed/seed capital are outside Metalmark's remit.
