Philip Schuch

Philip ("Phil") Schuch is a Partner at Atlas Holdings LLC, the Greenwich, Connecticut–based private equity firm founded in 2002 that specializes in control investments in manufacturing and distribution businesses, often in situations involving financial or operational stress. He joined Atlas as a Partner in 2003, roughly a year after the firm was founded, making him one of its long-tenured senior principals.

Before joining Atlas, Schuch spent more than 14 years at Ernst & Young LLP, where he was a principal in the firm's Transaction Support Group. In that role he participated in over 100 domestic and foreign due-diligence engagements on behalf of private equity investor groups and strategic buyers. His work at Ernst & Young also included active participation in company financings and significant involvement in fraud and litigation engagements, including numerous projects for the United States Department of Justice. This background is consistent with a role at Atlas centered on transaction diligence, finance, and risk — the analytical backbone of a firm that frequently buys distressed and complex assets.

Schuch is a graduate of West Virginia University and holds professional certifications as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in New York, Pennsylvania, and Illinois. Atlas today owns and operates a diversified group of roughly 30 industrial, manufacturing and distribution businesses; the firm has completed well over 100 investments in its history and, as of 2021, managed more than $6 billion of capital, having closed its fourth private equity fund at $3.1 billion. In 2024–2025, Blackstone's GP Stakes unit and Blue Owl's GP Strategic Capital made a strategic minority investment in the firm.

• Control, not minority/angel positions. Atlas acquires controlling stakes in companies it can own and operate for the long term — the firm describes itself as owning and operating a diversified group of industrial businesses.
• Manufacturing and distribution only. Target sectors include automotive components, packaging, pulp & paper, building materials, specialty steel, wood products, energy, and business/industrial services.
• Complex and special situations. Atlas is known for investing where there is financial or operational stress — including bankruptcy investments, out-of-court restructurings, carve-outs from larger corporations, structured equity/debt investments, leveraged ESOP acquisitions, and roll-ups.
• Institutional check sizes. Deals are funded from multi-billion-dollar committed funds (Fund IV closed at $3.1B in 2021; >$6B AUM), i.e., control-equity investments in established companies rather than early-stage rounds.
• Operational value creation. The firm pairs financial acumen (Schuch's diligence/CPA background) with hands-on operating involvement in acquired businesses.
