Background
Philip L. Hodges is a Founder and Managing Partner of Redmont Capital (operating as Redmont Financial Services), a Birmingham, Alabama–based private investment bank he helped launch at its inception in 1997. For more than 20 years his primary focus has been as an institutional investor in private alternative assets, managing pooled funds that invest in small and growing businesses across a range of industries throughout the Central Southeast United States. His investment strategy centers on high-growth small businesses in the health care, life science and technology sectors.
Before and alongside Redmont, Hodges held management positions at companies including Atherotech (a cardiovascular diagnostics lab), Tubular Products Corporation, and HealthSouth, giving him operating exposure to the healthcare and industrial sectors he now backs. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the Brock School of Business at Samford University in Birmingham, and holds FINRA Series 24, 63, 65, 79, and 82 licenses.
Hodges is an active board director for several Redmont portfolio companies, serving on the boards of Altimmune (Nasdaq: ALT), a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company in Gaithersburg, MD; ProvaMed in Birmingham, AL; and Wenzel Spine in Austin, TX. Over its history, Redmont has funded roughly 27–37 companies (per third-party trackers), concentrated in technology and healthcare.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests $1–$10 million per company, targeting privately held businesses with $3–$50 million in revenue and stable, predictable earnings.
- Focus on health care, life science, and technology — described by the firm as backing "high-growth small businesses" in those areas; broader portfolio spans IT services/software, CPG, manufacturing & distribution, business services, and communications.
- Flexible capital structures: senior, mezzanine and subordinated debt, plus preferred equity, in both sponsored and non-sponsored transactions.
- Backs companies "led by a highly talented, committed, and experienced management team" whose owners/managers hold "a substantial investment in the company" — alignment of ownership and management is a stated criterion.
- Looks for defensible market positioning, extended product life cycles with low obsolescence risk, and above-average year-over-year growth, typically providing "temporary capital for a 3–5 year period" to fund expansion or a strategic plan.
