Background
Phil Spencer is a serial telecommunications and cable-TV entrepreneur with more than 30 years in the industry, best known for building and selling broadband operators in partnership with the Chicago private-equity firm GTCR. He began his career as president and founder of Advantech, Inc., a regional telecommunications company headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. He later served as CEO of Everest Connections, a Kansas City cable system, from roughly 2001 to 2008, steering the company through ownership transitions under Aquila, Inc. and Seaport Capital before its 2008 sale to SureWest. Along the way he held leadership roles at Windjammer Cable/Communications, LodgeNet Interactive Corporation, and Aplus.Net/Codero.
In 2012, Spencer partnered with GTCR to form Rural Broadband Investments LLC (RBI) — the entity behind his rbillc.net email — with a strategy of acquiring broadband infrastructure to deliver cable, telecom and broadband services in small and mid-sized communities. RBI acquired NewWave Communications (then the country's 22nd-largest MSO, passing ~250,000 homes and serving 90,000+ customers across rural Illinois, Indiana, Missouri and Arkansas) as its platform in April/May 2013, then completed roughly five add-on acquisitions. GTCR sold RBI/NewWave to Cable One, Inc. in May 2017.
Spencer immediately reunited with GTCR and longtime CFO Rod Siemers to launch Mega Broadband Investments (MBI) in October 2017, headquartered in Leawood, Kansas, again pursuing a buy-and-build strategy in broadband. MBI operates under the Vyve Broadband, Northland Communications and Eagle Broadband brands; Cable One took a ~$570 million minority stake in the business. Spencer led MBI as CEO for about six years before transitioning on May 1, 2024, to a Senior Advisor role while remaining on the Board of Directors, with Andy Parrott promoted to CEO.
He was appointed to the Board of Directors of NCTA – The Internet & Television Association in February 2020, and has been repeatedly recognized on the Cablefax 100 "Power Player" list (2020–2023), including the outlet's 2020 Diversity List.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Buy-and-build in broadband infrastructure: Spencer's core, verifiable playbook is acquiring a platform broadband/cable operator and scaling it through organic growth plus multiple add-on acquisitions — the model executed at both RBI (NewWave + ~5 add-ons) and Mega Broadband Investments.
- Small, mid-sized and rural markets: His stated aim at RBI was to "deliver state-of-the-art communication services… to residential and business consumers in small and mid-sized communities," a thesis carried into MBI's "strategy to build a market-leading company."
- Sector conviction: Deep specialization in cable, broadband and telecom; he cites "construction issues" as the biggest obstacle to fiber expansion, reflecting an operator's-eye view of the space.
- Angel/seed classification: The provided stub lists him as an angel investor writing at the seed stage. His public track record is in PE-backed operating roles; specific seed-stage angel checks or a stated startup thesis were not found in public sources (see note under Notable Investments).
Notable Investments
- NewWave Communications — RBI's 2013 platform acquisition; rural MSO serving IL, IN, MO and AR; sold to Cable One in 2017.
- Cable Management Associates — 2013 RBI add-on acquisition, expanding the rural cable portfolio.
- Mega Broadband Investments (Vyve Broadband / Northland Communications / Eagle Broadband) — 2017 GTCR-backed platform Spencer co-founded and led as CEO; Cable One holds a ~$570M minority stake.
- *Note:* No specific seed-stage/angel portfolio startups for Phillip Spencer could be verified in public sources; the "angel investor / seed round" framing comes from the provided data, while the deals above are his documented, PE-scale broadband transactions.
