Background
Pierce Edwards is a lower-middle-market private equity professional specializing in deal origination and business development. In April 2026 he joined The Sterling Group — a Houston-based PE firm founded in 1982 with roughly $9.0 billion in AUM that invests in basic manufacturing, distribution, and industrial-services companies — as Managing Director, Business Development, working with the firm's Foundation Fund team to source new platform investments and add-on acquisitions from Sterling's Dallas office. At announcement, Sterling partner Scott MacLaren noted that "Pierce's deep relationships and sourcing experience in the lower middle market will be highly valuable."
Before Sterling, Edwards spent roughly eight years (2018–2026) at Valesco Industries, a Dallas lower-middle-market PE firm. He progressed from Vice President (2018–2021) to Principal (2021) and ultimately to Managing Director & Head of Business Development, with responsibilities spanning new-investment origination, financial and business analysis, due diligence, investment-process management, and active board/operations roles at portfolio companies. In May 2021 he was named Private Equity Investment Professional of the Year at D CEO's 2021 Mergers & Acquisitions Awards, recognized for his persistence in maintaining deal-sourcing relationships during the pandemic and for his command of deal structuring and due diligence "from origination through the closing process, as well as post-close on the operations and portfolio management side."
Earlier in his career, Edwards spent nearly four years at Evolve Capital, originating, executing, and monitoring private-equity investments in founder-run businesses across manufacturing, industrial services, and healthcare. He began his career at J.P. Morgan-Chase, managing portfolios for ultra-high-net-worth individuals and family offices, where he built his analytical foundation.
He earned an MBA from the SMU Cox School of Business (concentrations in Accounting and Strategy & Entrepreneurship) and a BA in English from Amherst College, where he played on the men's basketball team and served in the Student Senate. He is based in Dallas.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Lower-middle-market control and structured investing — not venture/seed. His career has centered on profitable, established companies, not startups. (The "Angel / Seed Round" label in the source stub does not match his actual practice.)
- At The Sterling Group (current): sources platform deals and add-on acquisitions in basic manufacturing, distribution, and industrial services; the Sterling Foundation Fund specifically targets companies with $10M–$30M EBITDA, with the broader platform reaching $100M–$1B enterprise values.
- At Valesco (prior framework he operated within): targets companies with $10M–$100M revenue, $3M+ cash flow, and for M&A, $4M–$10M EBITDA with >10% margins; invests via majority, minority, or debt structures, preferring family- and founder-owned businesses.
- What earns a "yes": strong management teams, a sustainable competitive advantage, and reasonable growth prospects.
- Explicitly avoided (Valesco criteria): VC/startups, real estate and financial services, and turnaround/distressed situations.
- Edge: business development and sourcing — building durable relationships with intermediaries and owners "that extend beyond individual transactions," with deep expertise in deal structuring and due diligence.
