Background
Puneet Yadu Dalmia (born 1973) is a third/fourth-generation member of the Dalmia industrial family and the Managing Director & CEO of the Dalmia Bharat Group, one of India's largest cement producers. He holds a B.Tech from IIT Delhi and is a gold-medallist MBA from IIM Bangalore. He is the son of Yadu Hari Dalmia, and took an active leadership role in the group's cement business in the mid-2000s (sources cite 2004–2007), overseeing its expansion into a company operating roughly 44–46 MTPA of capacity across 15 plants and grinding units in about 10 states.
Before running the family cement business, Dalmia was an internet entrepreneur: in 1999 he co-founded JobsAhead.com, one of India's most successful early dot-com job portals, which was acquired by Monster.com in 2004. That entrepreneurial background informs his continued activity as an angel investor in Indian startups.
He has been widely recognized for his leadership, receiving EY (Ernst & Young) Entrepreneur of the Year 2017 in the manufacturing category and a Best CEO recognition from Business Today. In public roles, he was appointed Chairman of the Development Council for Cement Industry (DCCI), set up by the Government of India in June 2021, has served as Chairperson of the Board of Governors of IIM Raipur, was appointed an Additional Director at Piramal Enterprises in 2021, and is associated with academic bodies including IIM Bangalore's NS Raghavan Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning and Ashoka University.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests as an individual angel, not through an institutional fund — decisions are personal and relationship-driven.
- Backs early-stage Indian startups, most commonly at seed/angel stage, but will also participate in later rounds of companies he already backs (e.g. CoinTribe's Series B).
- Recurring theme of financial inclusion / MSME fintech (CoinTribe, RapiPay) and marketplace/platform businesses (JetSetGo, HerKey, LocalCircles).
- Willing to take concentrated, high-conviction bets — in PRITHU he invested ₹50 crore for a controlling ~74% stake, atypical for a passive angel and reflecting an operator's appetite to build.
- Sector range spans fintech, proptech/real estate, HR & careers, consumer and travel, generally India-focused.
