Background
Rafael López Armenta is a Managing Partner (Socio Director) at Buenavista Equity Partners, the Madrid-based private equity firm that rebranded from GED Capital. He works in the firm's Private Equity / Buy Out division, where he participates in portfolio management, leads the execution of investment operations, oversees monitoring and divestments, and actively collaborates in fundraising. Over a career of more than 20 years he has directly executed transactions across the food, packaging, healthcare and hospitality sectors.
He joined GED in 2003, having previously worked in audit and consulting. He holds a degree in Business Administration and Management and a Master's in Financial Management, both from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. He is fluent in Spanish (native) and English.
He currently serves as a board member and responsible partner for several portfolio companies within the GED/Buenavista Buy Out Funds I and II, including Discefa, Araven Group, Procubitos Europe and Comess Group. The firm, founded in 1996, manages roughly €800M–€1bn across private equity, infrastructure and venture capital vehicles, and operates from offices in Madrid (and historically Seville, Porto, Bucharest and Sofia). It is worth flagging that GED does run a separate seed-stage vehicle — the GED Tech Seed Fund launched in early 2024 — but Rafael's mandate is control buyouts, not angel/seed cheques, so the "Angel Investor / Seed" classification in the source stub does not describe his actual activity.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Strategy: Lower/mid-market control buyouts in the Iberian Peninsula, executed through a "buy-and-build" model — acquiring a platform company and consolidating add-ons to build a European leader.
- Check size: Approximately €10–50M of equity per transaction; individual GED/Buenavista funds have historically sat in the ~€100–160M range (the newest PE fund reached a first close of €100M).
- Hold period: Typically 3–5 years to exit.
- Sectors: Food & beverage, packaging, healthcare, hospitality/restaurants, and adjacent industrial/consumer businesses — the areas where Rafael has personally executed deals.
- What makes them say yes: Established, cash-generative Iberian businesses with clear international expansion and consolidation potential (e.g. Discefa selling 75% of octopus products abroad; Procubitos merging to form Europe's largest ice manufacturer).
Notable Investments
- Araven Group — Zaragoza-based designer/manufacturer of products for the hotel and catering (HORECA) sector; GED sold its stake to US multinational CFS Brands (announced 29 July 2024).
- Procubitos Europe — Ice manufacturer; merged with Cubers Premium to create the largest European ice-production group, and reportedly sold to Magnum in early 2024.
- Discefa — Galician leader in the processing and sale of high-quality (frozen/boiled) octopus, with ~75% international sales (Italy, Portugal, Greece, USA); GED took a ~71% stake in June 2016 and later put it up for sale.
- Comess Group — Restaurant franchising group operating 400+ franchises across brands including Lizarran, Don G, Cantina Mariachi, Casa García, Pomodoro and Levadura.
