Background

Dr. Raimund König is the founder of Grünwald Equity, a Munich-area private equity firm he established in 2001. Over a career that began in mid-market dealmaking in 1988, he has led or overseen more than 70 mid-market acquisitions representing on the order of €1 billion in investment volume. He began his professional career as a management consultant at Bain & Company before moving into hands-on industrial investing.

From 1988 to 1994, König led IMM Industrie Management München GmbH and built out the IMM Group, an early German buy-and-build vehicle. From 1994 to 2001 he served as CEO of TA Triumph-Adler AG, where he is credited with transforming the company from a deficit-ridden typewriter manufacturer with roughly €75M in revenue into a profitable mid-market holding company generating over €700M in revenue — the operational-turnaround experience that shaped Grünwald Equity's "active, entrepreneurial investor" approach.

At Grünwald Equity, König is a partner, managing director, and supervisory-board member across the firm's various entities (including Grünwald Equity Partners GmbH and sector subsidiaries in industries & services, health, and geothermal energy). The firm positions itself as a long-term, majority-stake investor in D-A-CH Mittelstand companies, driving value through operational and strategic improvement rather than purely financial engineering.

Academically, König holds a doctorate in law from the University of Munich and an MBA from INSEAD.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests as an "active investor who acts entrepreneurially," emphasizing long-term value creation through operational and strategic improvement rather than short-hold financial engineering.
  • Focuses on established D-A-CH mid-market companies — typically profitable businesses with strong management teams and growth potential — where Grünwald usually takes majority stakes but is open to alternative structures.
  • Sector-agnostic ("open for all industries") across industrial and service businesses, with a stated interest in Industry 4.0 / digitalization; in practice the portfolio spans energy (solar, geothermal), semiconductor equipment, healthcare/therapy services, and app/software development.
  • Backs companies with a long-term partnership orientation; the firm highlights entrepreneurial alignment, profitability with upside, and management strength as its key "yes" criteria.
  • Will occasionally participate in earlier-stage minority / growth rounds (e.g. Series A), sometimes alongside angel co-investors — which is likely why he surfaces in angel/seed databases despite the firm's core being mid-market PE.

Notable Investments

  • SENEC — German residential battery-storage/energy company; Grünwald was an early backer, with the business later acquired by utility EnBW (a notable energy-tech exit).
  • Semsysco — Provider of wet-processing solutions for the semiconductor and related industries; acquired November 2022.
  • Immoconn / Juconn — Smart heating-system monitoring for buildings; Series A round (~€4M reported) around June 2023, alongside minnt.
  • minnt — App development studio focused on user-friendly interfaces; portfolio company and co-investor in Juconn.
  • Marpinion — Digital continuing-education platform for healthcare professionals.
  • Palabra — Speech-therapy and occupational-therapy practice group in Germany (buy-and-build in healthcare services).
  • Solar-Eins — A network/roll-up of leading solar installers in Germany.
  • Waldeck Namibia — Luxury lodge operation in Namibia.
  • Buffet Group (Buffet Crampon) and Unigloves — Reported among historical portfolio companies/exits associated with König's IMM/Grünwald buy-and-build track record.
