Firm
Motus Mittelstandskapital GmbH ("Motus Kapital"); also Managing Partner at GFEP – Family Equity and founder of the Stabwechsel succession platform
Firm Type
Mittelstand (mid-market) private-equity / succession-finance investor — NOT a classic seed-stage angel. (Aggregator listings such as Crunchbase tag him as "Angel Investors / Seed Round," but every primary source describes a mid-market equity and buyout financier; treat the stub labels as mis-classified.)

Established, profitable SMEs — succession situations (Unternehmensnachfolge), MBO/MBI, carve-outs, and growth capital; silent/majority equity rather than seed venture

Roughly €2–20 million of equity per deal (GFEP minimum ≈ €5 million); targets companies with ~€10–200 million revenue

Sustainably profitable, owner-managed mid-market companies with established business models, low customer/supplier concentration and high market barriers — typically at a generational/ownership handover

Germany and the wider DACH region (Germany, Austria, Switzerland)

Background

Ralf Baumeister (born 1963) is a German investment manager who has spent more than two decades financing mid-market business successions. He trained as a Dipl.-Wirtschaftsingenieur (business engineer, FH) and completed an MBA at London Business School in 1993. He began his investment career with roughly six years in the investment management of a ~€100 million mid-market industrial fund, where he was responsible for sourcing and closely monitoring portfolio companies.

From April 2005 to March 2008 he served as CEO/Managing Director of adpart (adpart investments Geschäftsführungs-AG), an entrepreneur-financed investment company. In 2009 he founded the Motus Unternehmensbeteiligungsgesellschaft mbH & Co. KG (today operating as Motus Mittelstandskapital GmbH / "Motus Kapital"), a vehicle backed by mid-market entrepreneur families that finances company successions in the German Mittelstand. The firm is registered at Amtsgericht Jena (HRB 111069) and describes itself not as an anonymous financial institution but as a small team of entrepreneurs investing largely their own capital.

Baumeister is also a Managing Partner at GFEP – Family Equity (founded 2014, offices in Munich, Frankfurt and Hamburg), a direct-investment office that pools capital from private investors, foundations and family offices to take majority stakes in profitable SMEs. Alongside partners including Dr. Matthias Graeper, Alexander Tewaag, Matthias Wimmer and Tobias Sutantio, GFEP manages a portfolio of 25+ companies organised across several sector funds, with roughly €100 million under management. He additionally founded Stabwechsel, a platform that matches company buyers, sellers and M&A advisors for succession transactions.

Note that a separate, newer firm — "Motus Unternehmerkapital" (motus-unternehmerkapital.de), founded by Michael Wild and Harvey Gross — uses a similar name and should not be confused with Baumeister's Motus Mittelstandskapital; the portfolio companies of that other firm are not his.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Finances business succession in the German/DACH Mittelstand — providing equity (silent participations, MBO/MBI backing, majority stakes) to established, cash-generative companies at an ownership transition, rather than early-stage venture bets.
  • Targets sustainably profitable businesses (~€10–200 million revenue) with proven models, technology/process competence, low customer-supplier-employee concentration, high entry barriers and long-term contracts.
  • Positions his vehicles as entrepreneurs financing entrepreneurs — a small team investing its own and partner families' money, offering "patient" capital, short decision paths and hands-on involvement beyond money.
  • Blends a club-deal structure with professional fund management: Motus is set up as a BaFin-registered external manager (KVG) that pre-screens deals and connects experienced investment managers with accredited entrepreneurs and MBI candidates. In his own words, the model gives wealthy entrepreneurs "die Vorteile eines Fonds" combined with "alle Vorteile und Freiheiten eines typischen Club Deals."
  • Communicated return targets of ~12–25% p.a.; one cited exit returned ~12% annually plus a ~40% equity kicker on the original investment after five years.

Notable Investments

  • Bäckerei Konditorei Ziegler GmbH — Munich-area bakery/confectionery chain (~25 locations); acquired 2017.
