Background
Ramsay Duff is a Scottish chartered accountant and corporate financier (born February 1962), a graduate of the University of Glasgow (B.Acc.) and a Member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland. Early in his career he worked with ING Barings and Charterhouse Securities in Edinburgh before moving into structured, tax-efficient investment work.
In 2003 he co-founded HM Corporate Solutions (HMCS), a boutique corporate finance business run in partnership with the Glasgow commercial law firm Harper Macleod LLP. HMCS built a strong reputation structuring and raising investment funds — particularly tax-advantaged vehicles — for high-net-worth private investors.
In December 2011, Glasgow-based private equity firm Maven Capital Partners acquired the HMCS business and recruited Duff to expand its range of structured alternative investment products, with a particular emphasis on projects using Business Premises Renovation Allowance (BPRA) and the Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS). He became a Partner in Maven Capital Solutions and an Investment Director at Maven, where over the following decade he led the identification, structuring and delivery of Maven's flagship property developments. Companies House records show he has held 46 directorships/LLP memberships, including Maven Capital (Telfer House) LLP (from 2014) and Maven Property CI LLP (resigned August 2025).
More recently he has established his own vehicle, Glenburn Advisors Ltd (Bearsden; director since September 2022), and in late 2025 took on new directorships (CHL (Glasgow) Ltd and Calmont V2 Ltd), suggesting a shift toward independent advisory alongside — or in transition from — his Maven role.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests in tax-efficient, well-structured property developments for sophisticated private investors — historically leaning on BPRA and EIS reliefs to enhance investor returns.
- Core sectors are hotels/hospitality and student accommodation, where he has argued the markets deliver dependable income and capital returns ("The Glasgow hotel market continues to perform strongly, showing robust year-on-year growth in room revenues").
- Looks for conversions of vacant/underused commercial buildings in strong city-centre locations into branded, professionally-managed assets (ibis Styles, Hotel Indigo, AccorHotels franchises managed by operators such as RBH).
- Values the full-cycle track record — his own stated satisfaction is seeing a project "having come right through the entire process; from its original redevelopment, subsequent years of successful trading, and its ultimate sale."
- Geographic bias to Scotland and regional UK cities with proven hospitality/student demand.
Notable Investments
- Hotel Indigo Glasgow — one of the very first BPRA-funded UK hotel developments; opened, traded, and was ultimately sold, delivering attractive investor returns (Maven's exit announced).
- ibis Styles Glasgow Centre West (Douglas Street / Waterloo Street) — £11.25m redevelopment of a vacant 1960s office block into a 137-bedroom hotel; opened August 2018.
- ibis Styles Glasgow George Square — earlier Glasgow hotel, high occupancy, ranked #2 for Glasgow hotels on TripAdvisor at the time.
- Hotel Indigo Durham — £15m development, opened March 2018.
- Hotel Indigo Cardiff — £13.75m Welsh-capital hotel development (with a further £3.1m of funding added later).
- Glasgow purpose-built student accommodation — development sold for £7.45m; Duff cited the student sector as continuing to deliver good returns for investors.
