Background

Raymond Choi is a co-founder and General Partner at Valley Capital Partners, a Menlo Park–based early-stage venture firm he helped launch alongside managing partner Steve O'Hara and fellow general partner Mitchell Kokko. He first encountered Silicon Valley in 2007 and has since worn several hats — physician, Kleiner Perkins–backed entrepreneur, angel investor, and venture capitalist. At the firm he focuses on early-stage technology investments in AI, fintech, cybersecurity, and health technologies, and he continues to practice emergency medicine in his spare time.

Choi's path into venture ran through medicine and entrepreneurship. He earned a BA in Chemistry from Case Western Reserve University, then studied at the University of Oxford as a Fulbright Scholar, completing an MSc in Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics (2006–2007). He went on to earn his MD from the Stanford University School of Medicine and completed an emergency medicine residency at Baylor College of Medicine. He has spoken about growing up working in his father's Midwest restaurant, crediting it with the values of "generosity, hard work, and humility" that shape his professional approach.

As an operator, Choi was co-founder and Chief Medical Officer of LifeSquare, a Kleiner Perkins–backed health-tech startup (roughly 2011–2013). Before and alongside Valley Capital Partners, he invested as a partner at The Valley Fund, where his deals skewed toward healthcare and consumer-health companies. His medical training gives him a distinctive lens for evaluating healthcare innovation, though his current firm work spans well beyond health into enterprise software and security.

Within Valley Capital Partners, Choi serves as a board member of cybersecurity company Stellar Cyber and has been active on deals including Orca Bio, Clipboard Health, Ferrum Health, and LiquidCell DX.

  • Looks for proven technology plus early customer traction in competitive markets — on Stellar Cyber's round he noted the company had "a proven technology and customer track record" giving it "a unique advantage and lead in the cybersecurity market."
  • Values-driven as an investor and partner, citing "generosity, hard work, and humility" as guiding principles.
