Background
Ricardo Junco is a Madrid-based private-markets investor with more than two decades of experience investing across the capital structure, and a CFA charterholder. He earned an MBA from London Business School and a degree in Business Administration from the University of Barcelona, and works in English, Spanish and French. He began his career in corporate and investment banking (associated with Banco Santander) and as a strategy consultant at Booz & Co. (later Booz & Company) in Madrid, before moving into private equity as a Principal at Mercapital, one of Spain's leading mid-market buyout houses, where he worked on Spanish private-equity opportunities.
In 2013 he joined Oquendo Capital, an independent Madrid-based alternative asset manager founded in 2007 that provides debt and flexible-capital solutions to mid-market companies in Southern Europe. Over his tenure he rose to Partner and Co-Head of the firm's Flex Capital / Junior Debt strategy. Oquendo has invested more than €800m across 60+ companies since inception, structuring deals through instruments ranging from common and preferred equity to PIK loans, mezzanine and unitranche debt, with tickets typically €5–40m for businesses with EBITDA of roughly €2–40m. During his time there the firm launched successive vehicles including a €250m fourth mezzanine fund and dedicated senior-debt funds, and expanded from a Spain focus into France, Italy and Portugal.
In April 2026 Junco left Oquendo to join Talde Private Equity (founded 1976, headquartered in Bilbao, with €425m+ under management across private equity and private debt) as Director responsible for the firm's newly opened Madrid office. Talde's managing partner Idoia Bengoa framed the hire as a way to deepen the firm's proximity to national investors and the business community; his Talde bio credits him with leading 30+ transactions and serving on the boards of multiple portfolio companies. Talde's private-equity arm backs Spanish SMEs through growth capital, internationalization and build-up strategies, running vehicles such as Talde Capital Growth (€102m), Talde Capital Growth II (€117m), and a planned €200m Talde Capital Crecimiento III, alongside its Talde Deuda Alternativa private-debt funds.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests in established, profitable lower-mid-market and mid-market SMEs, not startups — the "Angel / Seed Round" label in the source stub does not match his actual practice.
- Comfortable across the capital structure: senior debt, junior/mezzanine debt, PIK, unitranche, preferred equity and common equity — at Oquendo, tailored "flex capital" solutions for sponsors, family businesses and management teams.
- Ticket sizes historically €5–40m (commonly €5–30m), targeting companies with EBITDA of roughly €2–40m.
- Sector-agnostic / generalist, with deals spanning industrials, business services, consumer, IT consulting and software across Southern Europe.
- Geography: Spain at the core, extending to Portugal, France and Italy.
- Says "yes" to market leaders with professional management and clear growth, internationalization, build-up, acquisition or shareholder-transition needs — value creation through active board involvement.
