Background

Rich Maloy is a Managing Partner at SpringTime Ventures, a Denver-based seed-stage venture capital firm founded in 2016. Note that the "Venture Partner / Angel Investor" label in the stub is inaccurate: Rich is a founding-generation Managing Partner of an institutional fund (currently investing out of Fund III, ~$46M AUM per aggregators), not an individual angel. He co-leads the firm alongside Managing Partners Matt Blomstedt and Allyson Plosko and has personally been involved in 30+ investments.

His career began in finance, where he spent roughly seven years including managing reporting and analysis for a ~$1 billion division of News Corp. He holds a BBA in Finance from St. Bonaventure University. Rich later relocated to Boulder, Colorado and moved into the startup world, spending about three years as the North America Manager for IBM's Global Entrepreneur Program — a role in which he helped onboard thousands of startups per year. Prior to SpringTime Ventures he served as Lean Startup Practice Director at Econic, LLC.

Beyond investing, Rich is a well-known voice in seed fundraising education. He hosts the VC Minute podcast — a series of short, tactical episodes teaching first-time founders how to raise a seed round — and publishes a related Substack and "Daily Dealflow" newsletter. He also serves on the board of portfolio company Moxey. He describes his personal mantra as "Every interaction impacts a person's life; take virtuous action."

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Stage: Pre-seed and seed — SpringTime is typically among a startup's first institutional checks.
  • Check size: $500K–$1M initial checks in Fund III (historically $300K–$750K, sweet spot ~$600K).
  • Sectors: "Seeds high-growth startups in healthcare, fintech & insurtech, and logistics & supply chain," plus marketplace business models.
  • Stated thesis (his own words via Signal/NFX): *"High-growth startups in healthcare, fintech, logistics, and marketplace businesses. Founders with domain expertise, forging a path with a truly transformative technology."*
  • What makes him say yes: Founders with genuine domain expertise, B2B business models, and transformative (not incremental) technology. His enterprise-onboarding background at IBM means he values startups positioned to win enterprise contracts.
  • Hard exclusions: No biotech, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, hardware, direct-to-consumer, or international companies (US-only).
