Background
Richard Hill is an Investment Director at Phoenix Equity Partners, the London-based private-equity firm founded in 2001 that invests growth capital into UK private companies valued up to roughly £200m. He joined Phoenix in 2017 and has since been central to the firm's transactions across business & technology services, digital and data.
Before Phoenix, Hill worked in the corporate finance team at Deloitte, giving him an M&A and transaction-advisory grounding that he now applies on the principal-investing side. He was later promoted internally to Investment Director as part of a round of senior promotions at the firm (reported by Unquote).
Hill studied Physics at the University of Nottingham (2006–2010). At Phoenix he sits close to portfolio companies at board level, and describes his own approach to governance as strategic rather than operational-in-the-weeds: "My preference is always to spend most of a board meeting discussing the two or three key strategic value drivers."
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests via growth equity and buyouts, not early-stage venture — established, cash-generative UK businesses.
- Sector lanes: business & technology services, digital, and data & analytics; also active in media and healthcare, and the firm's wider themes include health & wellbeing.
- Firm philosophy (Phoenix): "We focus our time in areas with long-term structural tailwinds, and where we have deep expertise," with a founder-/management-centric partnership model rather than purely financial engineering.
- Board style, in his own words: concentrate meetings on "the two or three key strategic value drivers" — a signal that he backs teams with a clear, defensible growth strategy.
- Equity cheques typically in the £10m–£80m range.
Notable Investments
- Capital Economics (March 2018) — independent macroeconomic research and insights platform.
- Nineteen Group (November 2018) — trade exhibitions and events business.
- 1000heads — global social-media/creative agency; Phoenix agreed its sale to Labelium in 2022 (an exit Hill publicly flagged).
- Dufrain (July 2022) — data engineering and analytics consultancy.
- Logiq (June 2023) — cyber-security specialist.
- Ava Global — cited on Phoenix's team page among the deals he has worked on.
