Background
Richard Pugh is a growth-capital investor with more than 15 years of experience backing small and mid-sized companies. He is a member of BGF's Scotland team, splitting his time between the firm's Edinburgh and Aberdeen offices, where he focuses primarily on energy-services and technology businesses. BGF (formerly the Business Growth Fund) is one of the UK's most active growth investors, taking minority equity stakes in established, growing companies rather than making early-stage angel or seed bets — an important correction to the "angel/seed" framing in the source stub.
Before joining BGF, Pugh spent five years at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) in the Strategy and Transaction Services team, where he provided commercial due diligence and strategic advice on more than 25 transactions. That transaction-advisory grounding underpins his current work leading and structuring deals and then sitting on portfolio-company boards. He holds an MA in History from the University of Oxford.
At BGF, Pugh is an experienced non-executive director who has served on numerous portfolio boards across the UK. He led BGF's relationship with STATS Group — BGF's first-ever investment in Scotland (2012) and one of its longest-standing partnerships — and has more recently driven the firm's push into the energy transition and Scottish industrials and construction. He is also a public commentator on Scottish business, writing and speaking on how "patient capital" can support sectors such as construction and energy.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Backs established, revenue-generating SMEs and mid-market companies with growth potential — expansion/development capital, not seed or angel funding.
- Takes minority equity stakes and typically joins the board as a non-executive director, providing "patient capital" plus networks and strategic support rather than short-hold, control-oriented private equity.
- Strong thematic focus on the energy sector and energy transition — energy services, offshore wind, subsea/survey, hydrogen, carbon capture and storage — alongside technology/IT services and, more recently, construction and housebuilding.
- Values management teams and long relationships: on Glacier Energy he noted, *"We have known Scott Martin for over 10 years, and have been impressed at how he and the team have grown Glacier Energy."*
- On his construction thesis: *"The right funding, from the right investor, is often the missing ingredient that turns potential into reality for companies,"* framing Scottish construction as an ~£11bn, 200,000-job opportunity in grid connections, affordable housing and fire-safety compliance.
Notable Investments
- STATS Group — Aberdeenshire pipeline-technology firm; BGF's first Scottish investment (2012) and longest-standing partnership. The business roughly quadrupled to ~400 staff and ~£60m turnover before BGF's successful exit in 2023, delivering strong returns. Pugh led the relationship.
- Glacier Energy — Aberdeen-headquartered energy-services company (products/engineered solutions across industrial and energy markets, incl. hydrogen, carbon capture and energy storage). BGF took a minority stake in a multi-million-pound deal alongside Averroes Capital, July 2024.
- Sulmara — Independent provider of survey and inspection services to offshore wind and energy markets; BGF invested ~£15m ($18.9m), with Pugh joining the board as a non-executive director.
- Stellar Omada — Scottish IT/technology services firm; received £4.5m from BGF (2023), with Pugh joining the board.
- Cruden — One of Scotland's most established housebuilders; £15m BGF investment (November 2025) to accelerate delivery of sustainable homes.
