Background
Rick Holton, Jr. is a St. Louis–based investor and entrepreneur who runs his family investment vehicle, Holton Capital Group, where he is Founder, Co-Chairman, and Managing Partner. Holton Capital invests across technology, manufacturing, hospitality, life sciences, real estate, and venture capital, and Rick works alongside family members (Robert H. Holton also appears on the firm's leadership). He is an alumnus of Washington University in St. Louis' Olin Business School.
Holton became one of the most active builders of the St. Louis startup ecosystem in the early 2010s. He is a founding General Partner of Cultivation Capital, a St. Louis venture firm focused on technology and health/life sciences that typically invests $100,000 to $1,000,000 to accelerate early growth in (primarily Missouri) companies. He was also an original member of the FinServe Tech Angels and is closely tied to the Arch Angels network and the Capital Innovators accelerator, which he has described as the firm's "feed stock" for new deals.
More recently, Holton has become a General Partner at FINTOP Capital, a venture firm specializing in B2B, service-enabled SaaS and software companies in financial technology, with offices in Nashville, St. Louis, and New Jersey. FINTOP reports more than $700 million in committed capital across five funds and brings FinTech founding and operating experience to its portfolio boards. Through these roles Holton is deeply plugged into both the Midwest startup scene and the national FinTech investing community.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- "We don't fund companies. We fund people." Holton emphasizes backing entrepreneurial founders he can mentor over betting on a company in the abstract.
- Hands-on, involved capital: "I'm gonna write you a check, but I'm also going to get very involved." He believes "you learn more from sharing experiences than by telling people what to do," and frequently takes board seats.
- Stage & check size: Pre-seed and seed as an angel (~$50K–$600K, often ~$400K); larger institutional rounds through Cultivation Capital and FINTOP.
- Sector lens: FinTech / B2B service-enabled SaaS (FINTOP), technology and health & life sciences (Cultivation Capital), plus diversified family-office holdings.
- Rigorous diligence as a signal: He frames a Cultivation Capital investment as a "Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval," noting companies get "put through the ringer" before a check is written.
- Ecosystem-driven sourcing: Leans on accelerators (Capital Innovators) and angel networks (FinServe Tech Angels, Arch Angels) for deal flow.
