Background
Rick J. O'Brien is identified in a Liberty Capital Bank board biography as a Managing Director at Hersh Family Investments. Massinvestor separately lists him on the HFI investment team as “President & Chief Investment Officer,” while VisualVisitor and ContactOut list him as a Managing Director. HFI’s current public leadership page does not list him, so the most specific public sources conflict on his current exact title.
O'Brien joined Hersh Family Investments in February 2019, according to ContactOut. Before HFI, ContactOut says he was VP, Private Equity at M Terry Enterprises from November 2013 to January 2019; Liberty Capital Bank’s board page similarly states that he led private equity investments at M Terry Enterprises from 2014 to 2018. The same Liberty bio says he is also President of Westham Co, a developer and manufacturer of proprietary mosquito-control products.
His education is reported by ContactOut as Vanderbilt University and Rice University’s Jones Graduate School of Business, where he earned an M.B.A. from January 1989 to January 1991.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- HFI describes itself as providing “patient, flexible and value-added capital” and investing family capital in opportunities with substantial value-creation potential.
- HFI’s private equity and venture strategy focuses on partnering with management teams in growth-focused businesses with proven models, strong cash-flow potential, and clear opportunities for value creation.
- HFI says it targets buy-and-build strategies, growth capital, special situations, and formation capital, using flexible structures and operating expertise.
- HFI emphasizes businesses with outstanding management teams, sustainable growth, and enduring competitive advantages.
- The firm highlights family-office advantages: non-bureaucratic infrastructure, flexible decision-making, long-term investment horizons, liquidity, and the ability to structure investments around operational or personal requirements.
- Reported HFI-related NLM Capital Partners criteria favor profitable businesses with a track record of increasing intrinsic value, a sustainable franchise, and substantial growth opportunities; Massinvestor reports that NLM generally avoids companies dependent on broad acceptance of new technology, companies with limited operating revenue, direct retail, restaurants, and oil or natural gas businesses.
